I for one do wish the was some sort of way either the part was cheaper to replace or some sort of over haul maintenance to prolong life of the Master Cylinder/ABS thing
 
so basically we now have 2 weak points 3 if you are a LX owner weak front diff /master cyl ABS / and the AHC if you have a LX still love my 100 series
 
I tallied up the reports on safercar.gov for total brake failure in the 1998-2007 Land Cruiser and 1998-2007 LX470. There are a total of 18 reports. I have been unable to find an estimate of the number of actual defects of a certain type (brake failure for example) compared to the number reported to safercar.gov. I'm sure that something less than 100% of the total number of failures were reported. The majority (but not all) of the reports to safercar.gov are in the 1998-2003 models. That may reflect higher mileage and older vehicles are most susceptible or it may reflect a change that improved the single point of failure issue in the braking system. If anyone is interested in the details, I can post the year by year results.
 
Not true. NHTSA has changed in the wake of the GM ignition switch.

Like most things with Corporations and Governments something bad has to happen in order for anything to get done (somebody dies and makes national news, etc)

Seems like a good PM would be a new pump/accumulator ($1200 parts) at 150k+ from what was mentioned.
I remember reading in the 100 FAQ the one "No Brakes" thread back when I had my 80 and was dumbfounded a brake system could basically have no real backup.

Unfortunately, this isn't restricted to 100s. A friend broke a front brake hose on his 80, and he reported NO brakes (not just diminished, he said no brakes whatsoever!) Like some other posters have said, it's hard to believe that Toyota - of all mfrs - evidently didn't design the brake systems with a dual-diagonal system that has been common in the automotive industry for decades!

This may have been pointed out already, but this is a fundamentally flawed premise. This thread represents a convenience sample, resulting in biased data that is inappropriate for statistical inference.

I understand what you're saying, and you're technically right. This isn't a scientific study, but actually more of a polling to see who will respond and what the numbers of those who do respond tell us about that sample.

That being said, while we'll never have a global understanding of what is occurring in the 100 population, it IS interesting to hear what people in this "convenience sample" report. Certain things can be inferred from even a small sample.
 
No for '99 with almost 160k owned since 130k with full service records. That said, I just had a rust perforated fuel supply line yesterday that otherwise looked fine. There was a rust hole was on top of the line and completely out of view on an otherwise completely rust free line. It ran like a faucet at first smell of fuel. Had to do a road repair. I'm sure the brake lines are similarly fragile. I was looking in another thread for stainless replacement lines. They are offered for older LCs, but not for 100s. Maybe this is important enough to people that they'd be willing make a set for us too. At least this problem is maintenance preventable..

Yes, 1999 with around 205k, IIRC - lost accumulator, got dash warnings and pedal went immediately to the floor on next brake application.. Very little brake action available. Had I been towing or heading downhill, would have been very serious... And nerve wracking!

I had a failed booster pump around 135,000 miles on my 2000. The dash warning lights went off and the pedal went to the floor. I had my wife and kids with me and was able to stop the vehicle with downshifting, e brake and pedal to the floor. The average driver could end up killing someone or themselves when it happens.

How fast were you traveling at the time of brake failure?

Do you recall how long it took to get the vehicle to stop?

Hmmm..... I wonder how many of you will replace the booster with accumulator unit as preventive maintenance item after knowing the potential risk and failure of this item. I am thinking to offer a potential group buy say $980 for 5 order, $960 for 10 order, $920 for 20 order. Of course it is Genuine Toyota Parts, What you guys think? Fit all 100 series from 98-07. Part number: 47070-60010, Dealer list is $1611.14.
