Hi all, I took apart my gauge cluster to restore - I'm planning to go the whole 9 yards with cleaning everything to bare metal, re-plating the housing with yellow cad, and painting or powder coating.

When I was taking mine apart, I noticed the gaskets that hold my gauge cluster glass in place were falling apart and letting in dirt and debris. My glass cleaned up ok, but is chipping around the edges and has some scratches/yellowing.

I couldn't find new molded gaskets or glass (other than $OR at $43 per used glass piece) anywhere and I don't like the idea of spending a good bit of time/money restoring the cluster only to finish it with crumbling gaskets that allow dirt/moisture into the housing and scratched glass.

I imagine this might be an issue others deal with and that it might be nice to have new parts available, so I am looking into having these parts fabricated. New molded gaskets would be made of either neoprene or nitrile, and replacements for the glass would be made of clear acrylic plastic (shatter-resistant, what is typically used nowadays for gauge clusters). If I understand correctly, these shapes are the same for early - 82 40 Series cruisers.

I realize these are very specific items and maybe an extravagance if your glass isn't broken, but I wanted to ask if anyone else would be interested in these items, or if maybe a vendor would be interested to stock/sell these or use them as part of cluster restoration service?

I am also looking for guage cluster gaskets, but for a '64 40. Don't know if they are the same as what you are looking for, but if they are the same I would be interested in a set.

Definitely interested in gaskets. Have you seen my collection?

@Vulcan

This is such a great idea. I’m definitely in for a gasket set, maybe two!

@ucmlamb , according to my research, the glass sizes didn't change during the life of the FJ40, so 58-84 glass should all be the same. Since the gasket is molded to fit the glass, I imagine the gaskets are also all the same. If I move forward with ordering, I may ask you to test and confirm fit on your cluster cover.

Thanks!

I'm in for a couple of gasket sets.

Not a problem, I would be happy to test them out for you.

There may be a slight difference in 58 59 fj25 rubber/glass? Im down for testing/ buying a few sets of seals
Thanks, Mike

Thanks to everyone that responded! I got a pretty good number of responses within a couple days, so I'm moving forward with production as follows...

GASKET REPLACEMENTS

Detailed drawings of the gaskets will be made (2-3 weeks), and then parts can be produced and shipped (about 5 weeks). So I won't have these in hand tomorrow, but I'm putting things in motion now. I will have to buy a LOT of these! More info to come.

GLASS REPLACEMENTS

About half of respondents only wanted gaskets, and the other half wanted gaskets and acrylic pieces. I'm not expecting as much of a bulk discount for these as the gaskets, so I'll may do a more limited run of these which could also cause them to be a little more expensive. If you are interested in glass replacements, please PM and I will make a list and let you know if the cost changes.

When I have an update, I plan to post it on this thread, so if you are interested to receive updates, please watch this thread so you get an alert when I post!

Thanks,
Claude

acrylic isn't as durable as polycarbonate... mcmastercarr sells a nice scratch/uv resistant panel.

I used this panel to make my replacement gauge glass and my soft top door windows on my 1971. It is very easy to cut with a dremel or jigsaw. I then sanded it to match the outline I made from my original class.

welcome to the world of product development. Unless you can build everything by yourself on your kitchen table
it all costs more than you expect.
