Hello
I met a few of you guys at cars and coffee my pleasant a couple months ago. I was the guy with the dark blue 40 with the tan canvas soft top.

I finally got all my electrical sorted when the cotter pin for my parking brake on my 1970 40 came out. When I went to put it back in the metal pull handle hit the fuse block and caused a spark... None of the fuses popped but now my headlights and my turn signals don't work (along with the dash light for each). I am not a mechanic and am very weak when it comes to electrical. If any of you have any insight it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Huh. Interesting. I have a different configuration than you, I'm assuming you have a parking brake that pulls straight out and is just to the right of the steering column? Have you checked your ground wires? i assume the pull handle is no longer in contact with the fuse block... What is still working electrically besides ignition?

Thanks for the response! Yes, my parking brake is the type you pull out and is to the right of the steering column. It is no longer touching any of the wires.

My wipers work as well as my brake lights and gagues. Turn signals, headlights, tail lights and dash lights no longer work.

Maybe I will replace all the fuses even though none appear blown. Could the metal pull handle have cause the switches to burn out without blowing a fuse? I thought that's what the fuses were there for. I will try to get a picture and post it in a few.

I would pull the fuse block and check the connections on the back. they are weak solder connections. With a dead short like that, I would bet there's a bad connection or a bad fusible link. I'm not sure where they are on a 40, but on the 62, they come right off the battery.

Here is a quick pic of the fuse block.

The pin at the joint for the brake came out and the metal part swung down and hit the block on that side causing a spark. If I pull the block out and find the back is shot is there a source for a new block like this one? Thanks again you guys!

Update: I replaced all the fuses and thankfully my headlights and tail lights now work!

Bad news is my turn signals still don't work

I think I will buy the new block and see if that fixes the issue.

Johnvee... Thank you!!!! I just assumed that since they were new fuses it was an issue with the block. I took your advice and Boom it's all working!

I need to join this group officially. It's well worth it! Thanks again everyone!

Go to parts store or Wal mart and get a test light...saves all kinds of time. cheap ones are about a buck, better one under 5 bucks. well worth it.
