Was restoring the plastic headlights on my wifes car today and decided to take a look at the LC, which I know are supposed to be glass but mine looked plastic. On closer inspection it appears that there is some sort of plastic film glued to the front of the lights. You can see where a edge has chipped off on one side.

Is this from the factory or did a PO add these? I'm considering removing them as it appears to be somewhat hazy and probably impacts the already poor light output.

Just a guess, but the plastic could be some type of aftermarket stone guard to protect the factory glass.

Probably a 3M type of protective film. Had it on mine - took it off a few weeks ago because it was old hazy and coming loose at the edge. Lights look like new now.

Thanks. Since they were hazy and I already had the restoration kit out I decided to give it a go on these covers. Figured worst case they get worse and I take them off. Turns out the restoration kit did a nice job of making them clear again. Guess I'll leave them on for now.

Given that OEM headlights are no longer available and aftermarket options are very limited (and often plastic vs. glass), it's a good call to leave the protectors in place.

Agreed. I put some of these film lenses protectors on my new glass Depo lights. Got them from wethertech. Work great and actually stopped a rock from shattering my lense two months ago.

I've had a few PMs on this as I sold a bunch of clear headlamp protectors to Mudders years ago. I'll check current mailing prices and post the Mud deal. I exclusively use the 3M film and have always found this approach superior to the hard plastic bolt ons which get dirt on their back side, etc. Thanks.
