what is a arc start system? I thougt it would be cool to be able to convert a wire feed welder over to plasma if it was possible.

Just received the plans... very in depth details... seems to be simple tho... complete with arc start and air solenoid wiring diagrams... now need the time to assemble......
Keep us in touch. make it and take picture of it. and what it cut
Where are you finding them for $300?
I found a used one for $600 but it was rough so I passed.

I looked at that unit, Tig, stick and plasma and it looks too good to be true so I figured it was. Have you used that one? I've been looking for a Plasma cutter and a Tig welder and it was the only one that did both.

This stuff has come far!
I've had a ThermalArc 38 plasma cutter for a couple of years and it just keeps frustrating. Even with three filters on it's air inlet the thing struggles with 1/4" steel and won't come close to it's claimed 5/8" sever cut. Worse in aluminum of course, and it cost $300. more than the price of the Parker 50 amp model. Works good in sheet metal but can't rely on it otherwise. POS.
I probably have cut over 10' of 3/8" plate with my 40 so far on the first tip.. It might be getting tired now tho.. the last cut was not all that nice.
And, I do not have any fancy schmancy dryer, just the filter it came with..

Focus on the Journey
A fancy schmancy dryer like the Motor Guard M26 does make a difference, especially in the life of plasma cutter tips. It will also reduce blow outs as water vapor is a major contributor to reduced tip life and blow out.
You're in Las Vegas right? Your air is pretty dry coming through the door.

A dryer is probably only terribly necessary in places where the ambient humidity is commonly over 13%
I'm looking at a 60% reading on one of the gauges I have. Not long after I moved up here I sold a bandsaw through the local ads and the guy who bought it and I got talking about plasma cutters. I was about to buy one because cutting material is one of the most frustrating things I have to do and I though they offered a solution. The guy told me not to waste my money. He said it was so humid where he lived that no matter what he did he couldn't get his air dry enough to get a plasma cutter to work well.
Obviously I thought that I knew more than he did
He lived on the peninsula that extends toward the ocean from Portland. I had looked at a place out there and knew that it was/is unusually damp there so i thought I'd be OK.I need to spend more on drying equipment I guess. Can't sandblast worth a damn either. I've got two of the filters mentioned above on the back of the plasma cutter but this kind of wet is more than they are made to remove.
The weird thing is that I don't get water out of my drains, and very little out of my compressor tank.

My soon to be gone plasma cutter is a TA 38 thermal Arc, I think - I'd have to run out and look to be sure right now. I forget everything
I've noticed in forums that the equipment from foriegn sources such as your plasma cutter is gaining a grudging respect. The biggest bitch is about no customer service if it breaks. But as prices of that stuff keeps falling while prices of name brand equipment climbs I think a point will come when customer service doesn't matter so much. As it is there are people being frustrated by the customer service of big name makers as we speak, though the customers DO at least still have someone to talk to.
That is the cool thing about parkermetalworks stuff.

I've been thinking about a plasma for a while but could not find one cost effectively. I like the plasma/tig/stick combo. I book marked this site. Did not see a $300 dollar unit there though.
$400 now unfortunately..
Still about 3 times as cehap as you can find elsewhere...
