Very nice Dan. I like the vise on the left. Looks like a old Wilton.

Those Wilton bullet vises are great; love to have one but I never see them at garage sales and they're too darn expensive for me otherwise! Nice bench too .

spook, if you own that house... put in more sockets.... way more sockets

I'd love to, but it's just a rental. LOL moving that bench is gonna be a PITA. As it is, the guy who owns it is gong to have the garage wired for 220V 30A service, so that's a big plus.

Look on CL for a glulam scrap. Ive used a few that were 6+ inches thick. Very burly, throw some metal legs under and you got a monster bench.
Be safe for your last few weeks, Semper Fi.

Nice work benches, I'm making up a couple myself at the moment.
As to what surface to weld on I have found plain old cement sheet works for me, whether I'm welding something on a bench or the garage floor. It's cheap and provides some heat insulation. I've actually been using the same piece for quite some time and all the damage to it so far is black marks.

Just finished up my first work bench

I used 2x4's for all construction except the work surface which I used OSB(cheap, Straight, stiff, and you won't be seeing the ugly surface..) and Masonite.
What a mess..

There are a bunch of plans online, but none that really appealed to me. I kept in mind a few of the construction plans that I felt were well made and built a longer version with a few changes.
I started with the legs, these things are really sturdy. Made sure to use wood glue when I didn't forget and drilled pilot holes so the wood wouldn't split.

Cut the beams, added a little angle cut flair, top beams are a few inches longer then the bottom.

Beams in, along with supports cut to fit b/w the beams for the table top.

Used OSB for the TOP

Installed the masonite on top, which creates a nice hard spill resistant replaceable surface.

Cut out the bottom

Fit perfect on the first try! I love when that happens.
