Pinion shaft pin broken inside pinion shaft

Alright this is the cross pin I'm talking about.

You probably don't have all of the pinion shaft retaining bolt out yet and some of the broken pin is still holding the shaft in. As discussed earlier in this thread, you can either beat the holy crap out of the shaft (either direction) and hope that the retaining pin shears before carrier breaks or you can stick a short piece of stick welding rod in the hole, zap it for a half second to tack it to the remnants of the retaining pin and then pull it out. Maybe this will work or if you weld too long, you will just have more to shear with method #1.

My guess is that the spider gears have chewed the sh@t out of the shaft. It happens. You're gonna have to beat it a LOT to get it out, but you don't really have much choice at this point.

Plan on replacing the 3rd.

I'm replacing the guts with an lunchbox locker anyway so I'm just gonna disassemble the rear end and freshen everything up. I have a couple 60 front and rears but they are no where near ready for this project.

On mine the spiders had worn the shaft so much it was mushroomed over the washers behind them. And the shaft was broken in 2 places. Pretty spectacular breakage, wish I had taken pictures at the time. I didn't see any choice but to slice the carrier along the shaft line all the way around. Then I could get the spiders out to remove the c-clips and pull the axles. But of course it destroyed the carrier. Hope you have better luck.

Looks like I may have to drop the rear axle for one last try before I cut the thing out. I swear the deeper I get into this thing the more I wish I would've just sold all three cruisers and got a damn jeep. :bang:

Ah yes the carnage. Sorry for the pic quality. I had to cut the shaft and one spider gear but alas the carrier lives on!

Sometimes you have to do what a man has to do.

Nice save.

Enough of that blasphemy about J@@ps. The same could have happended to one of them but it would be easier to remove by breaking the axles.

Lmao! Dude I know I kinda lost my cool but it's been a long row to hoe with no real shop to work in, I mean I had to install the new 350 and AA torque splitter on my front porch.
The jeep axle comment made me spit lemonade out bro!

Man I really appreciate the offer but I'm replacing all this stuff with lockers anyway and they have their own shafts with locking pins. Very cool gesture my friend!
sweet! I missed that earlier in the thread. I had this same thing happen to me and lucked out after someone recommended the welding rod technique so I know your frustration. I remember trying to find a drill bit long enough to get at the pin and it was a ridiculous process.

I have never seen a lunchbox locker that came with a shaft and pin, but it has been a long time since I have looked.
