I thought those were just D-ring holders.......

That or for use as jack points using their Hi-Lift adapter bracket.

Personally, I would never even think about trying a recovering from one of those things. That's why I kept my factory hooks (rings). BTW, if you're worried about approach angle with the factory hooks, there is a third bolt hole behind the other two that will allow you to shift the recovery hook further back, preserving the approach angle. You need to use some washers or spacers, but no big deal. Take a look, you'll see what I mean.

That said, I do have an ARB for the 80, but am seriously thinking about a TJM for the 100. It won't be rock bashing, and the weight advantage and much slimmer design of TJM's 100 bars is tempting. Angles and clearance have _got_ to be better with the TJM stuff. All the new ARB stuff is so bloated...

My $0.02,

Hmm. from what i've seen this bumper and a arb winch are pretty close in pricing. 4x4connection(closest to me) wants 640 for this TJM and 675 for the ARB.....For an extra 35 i would think the ARB would be worth it.

That was along my lines of thinking as well, unless as a personal choice, asthetics and weight favor the TJM.

Brent,
Victor seems to have gotten a pretty good deal on his ARB, why not get one the same way he did? Or is it that you prefer the lines of the TJM better?

I personally like the ARB better than the TJM, but that's just me...

Like them both. Don't remember what Victor ended up paying. He did some internet searching then had 4WheelParts match the price.

May have to keep my eyes peeled on ARB prices for awhile.

Thx Doug.

New to this forum (just picked up a 94 FZJ80 to replace my soon to be departing 87 4Runner turbo), but not to TJM. I have run a TJM (T17 no hoop), with and without winch on my 4R for over 6 years. For medium to M/Hvy duty offroad it's enough IMO. I have plenty of 'other' damage from offroading my 4R, the TJM held up just fine. For hardcore (suspending the truck, esp an 80) forget it. Specific to the FJ80, the TJM is a decent replacement for the stocker, at about half the price new. I just ordered a T17 from 4x4connection in VA, as they had the best price. Alas and be forewarned, as with my 4Runner years ago, expect to wait a couple months for them to get off the boat. The winch mount can be reinforced, but IMS, the LC T-17 will only take a warn M8000, so med duty is all you get anyway. I find the wings to be a good feature, since they are universal to most bumpers, you can replace them quite easily (or modify them to take recessed side lights).

After spending too much time researching bumpers for my 80, I went with the TJM mostly because of the lack of aftermarket front end underbelly protection that was plentiful for my 4R. Adding the glass flairs, hefty weight and rather massive footprint, my offroading will be much curtailed, comparatively speaking. For those rock crawling or 'suspending', the ARB and Slee options can take the bigger and more appropriate 12/15k winches.

I just saw this thread and just finish installing a TJM on my vehicle as well.

I have a TJM on La Cabra. It was a hand me down from a woman that just had gotten divorced and wanted that horrible thing removed from her vehicle. Diligently, I found her a stock bumper for her and replaced TJM with it.

The TJM was bent up a little bit. She told me that her ex worked for an oil company and that on a field one day he got the bumper cought on something. Trying to back out of it the bumper got bent.
Free is a wonderful word. And I did not mind that it was bent.

Having wheeled the bumper for the last 2 years, I think that it's not as sturdy as the ARB. Last year I removed the wothless corner tabs. When you hit the bumper on one of it's corners, the tabs will move up and damage the body of your cruiser. Without them I'm much happier and I think it looks better without them.

I'm seriously considering getting a winch for my 80. When I do, I'll replace the TJM for something beefier. Along the lines of Slee's front bumper. I just wished Christo's bumper had hoops like the ARB or TJM bumpers.

At first when I saw Cabra's bumper, i thought it was an ARB due to the similar brush bar arrangements. So I guess, TJM makes several designs of bumpers for the 80?

Ali,

I do have to say that your rig looks pretty good with that new bumper.

Alvaro

Thanks but that TJM bumper went on a friend's 40th anniv vehicle! My rig isn't quie that pristine, besides, I'm quite happy with my beat up ARB bumper!

Was looking for another post and found Pictures of My RIG. Hey Ali, I hope you have a release to use pictures of my 40th Cruiser with a TJM.

All kidding aside, the reason I went with the TJM was really style / looks. I think ARB makes great product and have had their bumpers on a 97 4Runner and an 02 Tacoma.

Basically, from a Style perspective, the rounded look, in my opinion, fits better with the Cruisers round hood lines. The ARB has more abrupt angles and thus doesn't look at nice (to me).

Price was very much an afterthought but the ARB (with Shipping from CA) was roughly $100 - clearly NOT the deciding factor.

As far as strenghth, there is no doubt in my mind that the ARB is stronger -- it is heavier and thicker. Still I would guess that both the TJM and ARB would demolish a deer. The one place where the TJM could be worse is if the Deer hit the little side corner caps. These bolted on with 3 bolts but I have to imagine they would take a beating if they were hit by a 100lb plus deer.

That looks great. I like the horizontal bars. Wish I had them on mine.

Yeah, $200 savings is a great deal until you smack your first whitetail...

Those with the TJMs, would they hold up? Slee does not sell the TJM with the hoops but I would think they would be mandatory for animal protection. I'm a little more partial to the mule deer anyway.

I know fellow NorCal'r Alvaro Rodriguez has a TJM on La Cabra and he's taken it through multiple iterations of the Rubicon, Dusy Ershim, Moab, etc. with not too much trouble. Not sure about animal strikes, however.
