i've learned not to watch my fuel economy much with this truck, but with some recent mods/pm, i tracked my thanksgiving trip as closely as possible - mainly interested if my efforts would result in better economy.

Mods/PM included DT headers, new front o2 sensors, engine oil/filter, air filter, cleaned MAF and TB, and transmission fluid partial (4 qt) change (I did a bit more PM, but probably not relevant to fuel economy). Also, inflated tires to 44 psi, which is pretty close to my routine inflation, and drove 65-70 mph, as usual.

I've only checked my econ a handful of times on hwy trips, but have always been 15 to just under 16 mpg (basically 15.5). i scored 17.5 mpg over 300 miles from Reno to central California, and 17.1 mpg coming home. The only other mods are Slee Stepsliders, 285 Revos, and third row seats removed.

One last observation, I charted my exact route including gas stations etc on google maps, and came up with the same trip length as when I use a factor of 1.06 on the odometer reading to compensate for 285 tires (like 311.9 versus 312.4) - I was surprised by the agreement. FWIW.

I observed similar stats on my 200 mile trip today. Just replaced my O2 sensors, cleansed my MAF and TB. 17.5 average up from 14.5 a week prior to the maintenance.

thats good info, i was wondering what made the bigger difference between headers and MAF/TB. thats good news for everyone else, as the headers cost a lot more than some CRC cleaner !!!

I also was running 89 low grade has. I may try 91 and see if that makes any difference.

I'll have to add O2 sensors when I swap out the headers and do the cleaning of the MAF and TB. The O2 sensors are probably original.

Good info

I'll be tracking my mileage too since I did the 02s yesterday afternoon. I cleaned the TB and MAF earlier this year and they really weren't very dirty, but I might as well bust out the cleaner and do them again while I'm at it.

I've only put about 5800 miles on my rig in over a year of ownership...so probably only about 3k since the cleaning. I'll pull it anyway and wipe it down just for a clean slate, mileage-wise.

Did you regear for the 285's

Have you regeared to 4.88's or is the acceleration still okay with those 285's mounted? I am getting ready to pull the trigger on a front ARB for a 1999 100 Series to get rid of the 2 pinion diff and wanted to get input on installing new gear's while I am already in the axle(s). I just bought the truck and haven't driven it yet, so would welcome input from anyone?
Thanks

Most say that 4.88s are overkill for 33" tires on these things. But if you're mucking around in the diffs anyway and ever plan on going up to 35s, you might as well put them in. Just my .02.

I changed my fuel filter for the 1st time in 133K miles and got 15.7mpg on the first tank. I was <15 prior to this. It may be an anomaly, but the damn thing is a hell of a lot peppier too. (stock tires)

In the picture in that thread MAF and TB cleaning, it shows a picture of (what would seem to me) the MAF. Sorry for the silly question (I'm hardly a mechanic or anything close to it), where would I find this on the truck. That picture just shows a zoomed up picture of it being held in hand. Where can I find this on my truck to clean it? I do the TB regularly on mine, just want to do the MAF. Ideas?

The MAF is the large, round sensor assembly JUST aft of the airbox in the intake track. You'll see the plug for the wires going into it, and it will be attached via worm clamps - one side attaching to the lip of the airbox, the other side attaching to the intake tube that runs in front of the fan shroud and into the TB.

Just unclip the plug from the MAF sensor, loosen the worm clamps, and pull it free of the airbox and tube. DO NOT touch the internal wires with anything. They are fragile and can be permanently damaged by physically fiddling with them. The only thing you need is some MAF-specific cleaner in an aerosol can. Just spray the wires and let it dry thoroughly before reinstalling. Easy peasy.

This is the MAF. It mounts on top of the intake, just down from the air filter (passenger side of of truck). Disconnect the electrical harness, remove the screws and it lifts straight up. When instlalled all you can see is the top part where his fingers are holding it.

how many :banana:s? Did the filter look dirty? I've had a old toy pickup sputter and die from a dirty fuel filter (at around 130k miles too) so I don't doubt that at all.
