Distraction city.

This will effect your night driving vision (assuming all that light is on at night).
My phone switches google maps into nighttime mode however other apps do not have this option. The automatically adjusting brightness will reduce the light output but the brightness needs to be adjusted further manually for the best levels.

If you're going to use a phone in a vehicle (for reasonable purposes, such as navigation and music), this is the safest place to mount it, besides maybe a windshield mount. Your eyeballs don't have to travel very far between glancing at the screen and looking at the road.

Most cell phones at min brightness are no brighter than the gauges, radio, etc. For added bonus, one can run a "blue light filter" app, which dims the screen even more.

I've sent the bend form off to a machine shop, after which time I should be able to get a few prototypes made. Stay tuned and thanks for everyone's patience.

You should probably start a new thread when you get set up. It's contaminated :flush:

Here's the prototype tool block. There's still work to do to get the other plates needed to properly align and bend, but it's progress.

There’s an iPhone trick to put a dimming mask on the screen by triple tapping the home button. Triple tap again and it’s gone. Replaces a zoom function.

I've never been too keen on the 80 series phone mount solutions that place the device way over in the useless cubby area, or any windshield/dash mounts. I wanted something integrated and clean, so I got to work in CAD, and got this water-jet and bent up. It uses a Bracketron device holder, but others (Ram, etc) can be made to work too.

It attaches with 3 screws to the dash structure for the load-bearing support, and a double-sided sticky tape pad on the other side for stability.

If anyone is interested, I will have these available for purchase soon.

Like it. What does the dash look like when mount is removed?

If you use double-sided tape on the left side of the mount (the "foot" I call it) then the dash can be returned to 100% stock with zero evidence that it was ever installed.
Thanks! What kind of tape do you recommend to keep grip from subzero to 180 or 190 (closed car in SoCal summer)?

@AndrewInf nice progress on the mount!

Want to see if a 3d print is strong enough to use as a tool block?

Outsane where did you get that water bottle holder?
Looks like a 3D printed design, maybe in PETG plastic.

@Outsane

I designed and printed the cup holder, $25 plus shipping.

Sorry for the delay. I recommend 3M 4011 double sided tape, but the regular 110 stuff works well as long as the surfaces are very clean.
4011 is really hard to remove, so I have been using 110 while I get the prototypes made.

Speaking of which, I am still working on this. I go overseas for work and that makes time for this scarce.

There’s a trick to put a filter over your screen on the iPhone by triple tapping the home button. You replace the zoom with the dim function. Doesn’t save on battery life because it’s a filter, but it really dim to the screen. Triple tap again and it’s bright. The first time you have to go in manually and set it up.

if it happens for a reasonable price I'm in.
