Im in the process of getting my 80 ready for another 18 years and 150K miles of trouble free use. My PHH was one of the original items on the list. Even though it looked great put it on the list to avoid dealing with it later on the trail. After close inspection Im guessing it could of gone another 150K.

Vehicle history-
All fluids change regularly
Lived its life in AZ in the shade
Toyota blood for coolant

I saw no reason to replace it with nothing else but Toyota OEM parts and continue using Toyota blood for coolant. I made the choice to replace the entire PHH assembly (not just the 60mm hose) to give it the OEM look.

Why would anyone would use anything but Toyota OEM rubber?

Pretty amazing it looks that good after so many years! If I remember correctly you are the original owner. If so, have you used any particular hose 'dressing' it's whole life? Also, have you used any harsh cleaners in the engine bay? Not often you get to ask these questions to an original owner. I'm impressed!

Im not the original owner

No hose dressing ever
I have been known to wash my engine bay :grinpimp:
I love Simple Green

Well crap I thought you bought it new. Thanks.

My 96 was blistered, swollen, crusty and leaking just a little bit. I swapped it out somewhere around 145k miles, just a couple weeks ago. PO had (nasty fish smelling yuk) green coolant and a crapload of stop leak.
I opted for a 4 foot chunk of 5/8 and rerouted it around the brake booster. I like the serviceability idea of this setup, but will need to do some custom isolation for the hose to keep it from flopping around. Even just a little, I figure will wear through eventually.
Whole new respect for those who changed it on the side of the road!!!!!!!!

What is this, the pipe with the hose(s) already attached?? Got a photo?

Wow, it looks pretty good to me for 18 years with 150k miles. Mine looked the same with 125k miles when I changed it last year. It is worth it to pay for oem part!

Didn't know that part existed, looks like it would make the job a bit easier. Surprised your original hose looked so good.

Mine looked the same after 161K. When I pulled it I was surprised at its condition give all the comments about it, nonetheless, it sports a new one as of a couple months ago.

Mine burst down in Mexico with <140k miles (cost me a whopping $20 to have a local mechanic fix it while I drank beer :hillbilly:). He replaced it with a piece of US made Goodyear hose and it ended up leaking on the guy I sold it to a couple years later.

OEM or silicone for me if and when I get another 93+ 80.

mine looked good in a post-mortem too, but hard to be sure looking at it from the outside originally so I did it for peace of mind and to make it easier to redo if it were to burst later on.

Agreed that the Toyota stuff is the best. Don't get all the silly color silicone...

I can't even find my PHH! I googled for pictures/location & still can't see it from under the hood, thru the fender or from down under. If I can't even find/see it then how do I replace it?

Above your starter, below the intake, behind the knock sensor. If can be seen in a small window looking from the front of the motor back. Pictured is just the piece replaced without the correct clamps, not the assembly.

Getting to it for replacement is a different story...........

You Toyota guys are a whole different breed of animal. Any one of the the Jeep forums I used to haunt would have bragged about the ways they rigged this up with garden hose and rubber bands, but instead y'all talk about how you found the most original piece of 5/8 heater hose. Don't get me wrong, I agree it makes sense to do a good job, it's just a change in philosophy. It's like nobody wants to forget they were 40k trucks 20 years ago.

I understand where your coming from as I'm an ex-Jeep guy too. Jeeps are more utilitarian and so are the repairs.

I don't think it's a matter of being utilitarian. Its more of a matter of starting with good quality parts on the Toyota. Jeep.... not so much.

AaronM33: most of us Landcruiser owners have learned over the years that there just isn't a better replacement aftermarket part available, even for hoses, with rare exceptions. I'll let the experts chime in on this, but the general impression I have is that Landcruiser parts are made to even a higher standard, more robust, than parts designed for other Toyota vehicles. Having said that I used Gates Green Stripe heater hose for my PHH replacement as it may be an improvement (rubber type) over the original hose. On the other hand the Toyota heater hose used for this location may also have been improved in the past 20 years, IDK.

I think it's just a matter of being proud of the quality construction and parts used in the truck, plus pride in ownership and how they perform maintenance. I seriously doubt the price someone else payed 20 years ago enters into it. At least in my time here I haven't heard it mentioned at all, except in reference to the ridiculous cost of replacement parts.
