Not surprised. Side-by-sides ignored the signs and cut a slew of new trails everywhere, turning it into a Hell's Landscape. They had to grade the road to get the heavy trucks in with the boulders to make the barriers side-by-side proof. The road is there to provide access for the Forest Service. They let the responsible public use it until the irresponsible ones ruin it for everyone. The alternative was a locked gate, but they built an emergency helipad clearing to facilitate emergency evacuations in the area and wanted to leave the road open for that purpose.

Bummer, but I totally see that happening. I haven't wheeled there, so I'll scratch that from the want-to-do list....

I felt like Uwharrie is a bit like that with all of the guardrails and cables, but at least the terrain is still there on the marked paths...it's like you are in one of those kiddie go carts with a track under the bottom of it so you can go left-right about 6" each way...

I would rather them grade it and bolder the trail than close it down.

dang. i was there a year ago and it looked like they had just finished dumping VW sized boulders in the flat mud-bog area at the entrance/exit (depending which way you ran it). to combat the SxS's tearing it all up

but all the off-shoots deeper in the trail were still open. now that is gone? and the main trail itself is graded flat? sad day

but agree, a locked gate is worse

I went up there this AM the trail itself has not changed and they have filled in a bunch of ruts that happened with the heavy rains they also added a bunch more big rocks in the north side but the trail is still the same running north and south.
I spoke to the Ranger at Edinburgh gap and she said they are working on their way south from the camping area and have done the first 5 miles. I drove it and from a W 16 south you can see where more boulders have been placed to keep people on the trail, but the trail itself Has not had anything done to it
You can see where people have literally cut new trails right off the camping areas and the parking area is to go up into the woods with side-by-side and those have not been addressed. According to the Ranger. She said this is literally the last gasp of trying to keep people on trail. from the north, you won’t see anything different until you get to the old camping area and they have added more rocks from the south when you get about a mile up the trail with that very sharp curve is that goes up the mountain, you can see where they filled in the ruts from rain and people wallowing out the trail, but other than that not much has changed

It is a shame that the SXS folks do this. They are a big reason for parts of Moab and other areas getting shut down. I am not sure why they are not educated about this kind of thing. I watched a Youtube video last night and saw a guy blaze a new trail in Sand Hollow with his new buggy driving all over wild life with out a care. This is what is sad. People see this and think it is ok.

I am happy to hear the trail is still open. We had all kinds of trails to go to back in the 90's before they started shutting them down. Man, I feel old, but yes that is why I bought a trailer and have traveled all over the country, not much left around here.

I think the trail is still a perfect trail to take people who have never run a 4x4 offroad on to allow them to at least feel how their vehicle should be and it is extremely stock friendly. I ran it today in 2Hi and never even aired down. I would love to see them or a offroad org put together a good video on the trail and what USFS is doing to maintain and keep it open and point out how the side by sides are going to shut it down of this keeps up and toss it all over social media.
I got the impression they (USFS) was done with the issue when the statement " good locks are pretty cheap" was used in the conversation.

And for Uwharrie being turned into the amusement park car rides like @CrabCake mentioned.

@JohnVee don't get me wrong, I had a great time at Relic Run!
