I am losing the paint finish battle to the sun here in AZ. I have the emerald green finish, I dont love it but I dont hate it either. The hood is the problem, the crazing, white powdery finish is driving me nuts everytime I am in it. An area up top behind the sunroof is bad as well but cant see it. The rest of the truck is in good shape.
1. paint the hood, and deal with the mix match(new paint to original painted fenders) how bad is this anyone done this?
2. find a hood in good shape searching junkyards(expensive to ship, rare and could fade soon after I get it)
3. paint the whole truck, I think too expensive or is it not, I am picky and would want a good job. I know people who get cheap jobs done and it peals like a bad sunburn soon after. How much is a good paint job 3-4k? I would rather spend my dwindling cruiser money on toys(sliders, rear carrier, etc.)

Any suggestions? been there done that, stay away from types of input.

thanks
Chris

they should be able to paint the hood the same as the rest of the body -- the current color. If you go with the original paint code, it won't likely match. Hoods aren't usually too bad because there's a visual break -- the gap between the hood and the quarter panels -- most people don't notice a color mismatch as much.

Or...as Todd suggests -- go flat black. I like that idea.

Rhino Line the beast!

Depends where it's fading on the hood - but painting/lining the center section black looks pretty cool IMO (of course mine's white) ... maybe Landpimp could post up a pic of his? This would be much cheaper - I've heard $5k for a good paint job on an 80...and you could tell the wife it's cutting down on glare!

my $0.02 says just prepare and paint the hood to match and blend in the tops of the fenders. it's a thirteen year old rig. spending multple $K's on a total repaint sounds like good money after bad.

good luck,
aaron

I have seen photos of white 80s with this, probably one of you or someone else on the forum. I thought this would only look good on a white 80 becasue of the glare from sun/sun,etc.
Any pics of a flat blk finish on a green cruiser?

paint the hood yourself, maybe sunroof area also, only cost you paint and renting/buying tools. if it doesnt look so great, noone will see it ;)

if it costs less than $500 to do hood and roof might be worth doing that, otherwise think about how long your going to keep it and whether painting whole thing is worth it.
people are talking about throwing money away painting it? take a look at all the 40's, 55's ,60's etc. people spend money on looking good/painting. in the end, paint will be cheaper than bodywork/painting to fix rust.

Here is plan/options 5 and 6...if applicable.

5. there is some life left (ie just your clearcoat is chalking in those areas)....wet sand and buff

6. the clear coat is definitly gone but color coat is salvageable....wet sand w 1600ish, and re-spray the clear coat...

The fact that you state that it is a cazing, "white powdery finish" leads me to think that it is a clear coat issue and that either of the above may work. Other than that I'd do what ace10 suggests...but maybe not bother blending the hood into the fender tops. It's a tough area to notice...unless the match is really bad. Take your truck to the Autobody/Paint supplier, they have a gizmo that they use to formulate the paint to match better than just pulling the paint codes.....which is sometimes hit or miss depending on the manufacturer.

My 93 is also green and I had rust and small body damage that I had fixed here in Lubbock (basically, no mans land).

To have all of my problems addressed was only $700 (paint, rust over the windshield, rust on the bottom of 4 doors, a dented rear tail gate, and a big L shaped door ding on the rear pillar).

The body shop that did the work did a perfect blending job but afterwards asked me why I didn’t just pay an extra $1000 and get the whole rig repainted.

That's right for $1700 I could have my WHOLE truck repainted, de-rusted and de-dinged!

Why didn't someone tell me before hand?

toddslater, I see small spider cracks now where the clearcost is. This might work. However, I have a few deep scratches from the PO who had a bug bra on it. I am thinking to have the hood painted to match the current "shade of green". The roof is probably a good area to wetsand and reapply clearcoat. This brings up another somewhat of a problem - I would have to rig up some time of scaffolding to get a comfortable reach to the middle top!
thanks guys

You should be able to get you whole hood painted for ~ $150.

Paint it your self.
Take the amount of $$$ they want to pait your 80 and buy the supplies and paint.
If you screw it up you will still have $$$ left over to paint it again

I painted my 60 with great succes except that the paint color didn't come out like I thought it would. I wanted grayish green. THe color swab on the color sheet looked like what I wanted but when I painted it it came out pond scum greem :(
I had the paint store mix a darker version of it to match the Industrial Emron Gray Primer ( its gray green for some reason). That can of paint turned out great.

I would paint it (the hood only) myself, but you may not be comfortable with that, or have the equipment to do it.

I wouldn't go with one of theose color matching outfits. The problem is that in AZ, you have incredible sun/UV working on your paint all the time. The darker colors are the worst as I'm sure you know. The problem with the color match is that the rate of color change for the original vs the "new" color won't be the same. So while you're new paint might come close to the old paint, over time it will not match. So I'd stick with the original and let it blend over a little time. Beisdes, I don't think you'll see tht much of a difference after a couple of weeks and some dust.

There is merit in what Todd says. If just fixing the clearcoat works, you will have the best fix since then the color will be less of a problem. You may want to try that first and if it doesn't work, then do the whole repaint.

If you do all the painting yourself, the cost of paint will be about $100 (for base coat and clearcoat). You could easily buy a compressor and spray gun for the difference between what a body shop will charge you and what it would cost you to do yourself. Granted, the body shop may do a better job, but that depends on you. It's worth a shot IMO.

If you are going to show the 80 at Wmart p-lot on Sat. nights, then have a body shop do the work.

If you love trees and rocks, then paint it your self :D

Put a nice dent into the fender and no one will notice the hood ;) Otherwise, check into the wet sand option.
