I'm painting my axles on my fj40 and was wondering if I have to wire wheel them to bare metal before painting. I was going to power wash them then run the wire wheel over the whole axle but not to bare metal (at least not bare on all of it). Next I was going to clean the surface to get all oil off then rattle can prime and then rattle can paint black. I want it to protect and look semi good. Am I over doing it or do I need to do more steps?

I'd pressure wash, wire brush any loose stuff, and then prime and paint. For such things I've been using the farm implement paint and primer at TSC. Brushing or using a roller is going to get a more solid coating than spray cans, though.

Is por out of the spray can uv rated I sprayed my frame with the reg por 15 a couple years ago and it had to be top coated the horns looked rough after6 months because I failed to top coat at first

I like the idea of por-15 in a spray can. I didn't really know if you could put primer over scuffed paint or if you needed to put it on bare metal before you paint it.
I'm now thinking about the brush technique to really get it well coated.

Thanks

I wouldn't do an axle in any of the bedliner type coatings. You're just going to scrape it off the bottom of the axle and you'd have to worry about what to do at places like the third member to axle housing mating area and such.

Ya but he's got some other stuff that goes on commercial rigs to protect them from rust. Oops my link puts you on the bedliner section. its called chassis saver and you can put it over rust. Heres the right section...

I had the opportunity of painting two axles at different times...
The first Axle I used paint stripper and left me with a shinny metal.. I prep it (muratic acid) and used POR15. it held alright but after a few years it started to peel off the way a sticker does...on several small spots...

The second time.. I had the axle sandblasted and then prep it (muratic acid). Used POR15 and the result was amazing.. it has held up and has not peeled off at all..

I guess if you do use POR15 the trick is to prep it properly and have a rough surface where the POR15 will go on... It sticks better than on a nice smooth and shiny piece of metal....
