Owning an HJ versus a BJ

However, especially in light trucks, 24 Volts was just too much trouble for the owners and users. Radios need special attention, through the use of a second alternator, or a special switching power supply to provide them with 12 Volts. Bulbs are special, somewhat hard to find, and more expensive.

Opinionated bullfudge.

For cars not much really, half the amps, less amps mean better life on everything operated by electricity.

I wouldn't recommend someone to stay away a truck because it is 24V. Just learn that there are some thing you cant do, like tap 12V and you'll be just fine. Personnally my only hickup is that most 24 to 12 volt converter continuously use amperage even if there are no loads coming out of the converter. And if you do not use your truck daily like me, the batteries will be dead in a month. There might be new converters now that do not have that constant milli amp load. If you want to keep radio memory you have no choice to hook up the converter directly to the batteries full time.

What are 24V benefits?

I will install the 24V->12V converter and remove the evil 12V headlight center tap (switch to 24V headlight).

Why??? the evil tap is there for a good reason, it is stock and should be left alone. But there shouldn't be any other tap.

What is JP-8? Biche, I too have thought of removing the evil centre tap and converting the headlights to 24v.

That was interesting article. Sure, the author did probably add in some of his own bias, but by and large, I felt there was quite a bit of truth to it.

My wife was just telling me of an article she just read in the National Post about how the big car manufacturers will be going diesel too...and I mean cars, not trucks.

I guess they finally figured it out when the military ignored all the nonsense coming from Detroit and went with diesels :-) I especially like Cndn military's G-Wagen.

well, after 30 some years of owning both the 12V and the 24V diesel land cruisers, i have yet to see any advantage to the 24V system.
both start the trucks down to -35C
both charge the batteries for the toys
both drive down the road with the elec working

but

once you break something 24V it can be a bugger finding a replacement and the cost is usually MUCH more expensive. running 12V accessories in a 24V vehicle will always be ... interesting.

shrug, i drive what is under the hood. i do not fear the 24V but if i have a choice, life is easier with 12V.

the only concern with the older 24V vehicles is the finding of elec parts so as long as you have a back up vehicle to drive should the 24V act up then enjoy.
if you have a family and this is your only DD then i would suggest rethinking the idea.

Rosco, your point made me
