Hey Jerod.

I taped up the air filter because I was pressure washing all the grime from it's long road trip. These SoCal units aren't big fans of salt.

My wife claims the kids are mine, however I resemble The Stooges (in looks and actions) so I have my doubts. I hope they aren't mine - it'll give 'em a chance in the future.

West Coast Cruiser Insanity

Here's some shots of my 1977 FJ45 Longbox with 81k miles. I've had her a couple of months--long enough to know her strengths and weaknesses. The good: complete and original including the interior, Warn winch, body and running gear--can you dig those cloth seats?!! The bad: some frame rust, sacked suspension and bad knuckles. Have ordered OME and knuckle kit and I'm looking for tires (any suggestions? I kinda like the original skinny look. Anyone know the original tire size?) The frame is gonna have to wait for winter.
I have a rusty '81 BJ41 which will donate front discs and 3B diesel engine someday although it's a shame to pull the 2F because it runs like a clock (but it's a gas gussler. This is where the insanity comes in--I must be crazy to take on all that work!
I expect to get my collector plate for her this week (which will give me cheap insurance) and then I can go 4 byin'!!
What a great site this is--many thanks to the workers who keep it up and running!!
P.S. I know, I know, the bezel is upside down but it came that way and I kinda like it!!

1974 LAND CRUISER HJ45LP LWB TRUCK
Left Hand Drive Diesel
“Frame Off Restoration”


It is hard to remember when this project started. Although it seems I have been in the middle of this restoration forever, it has been one year. The story begins when I was contacted by a fellow in Colorado who wanted to buy a radiator grill emblem that I had for sale. I sent him a note after shipping the emblem just to make sure he received it. He confirmed its arrival but informed me that the truck now had to be sold. A new house purchase was in the works for him and the funds from the sale of the truck were needed. This was unfortunate since he saw this truck everyday on his commute to work. After trying to purchase it for many years, the farm owner finally sold it to him. Hearing this story I jumped at the chance to buy it.
The truck originally came from Australia. The farm owner said he purchased it new from a Toyota Dealer in Colorado. It was explained to him that in the 1970’s several vehicles were swapped between dealers in Australia and Colorado. This is how this Australian version left hand drive diesel truck found its way to the U.S.


** BODY CONDITION **

Although a farm truck for most of its life this vehicle escaped the dreaded rust problem most associated with Land Cruisers. The only body repair required was in the bed. A large tool box was installed in the front part of the bed, causing the floor under it to rust. The entire front section of the bed was replaced with a duplicate steel floor. It was repainted piece-by-piece using factory Nebula Green (color code #622) in base coat clear coat. **ALL STEEL** No fiberglass, aluminum, rhino liner, or diamond plate on this BEAUTY. Entire frame and all parts attached have been powder coated.
New parts include:

• Front fenders
• Windshield
• Door weather-stripping
• Window channel felts
• Wing window weather-stripping
• Hood bumpers
• Windshield hooks
• Hood hooks
• Front Bumper
• Radiator grill emblem
• Diesel grill emblem
• Front turn signal assemblies
• Rear turn signal assemblies
• Apron emblems
• Door mirror assemblies
• All screw, nuts, bolts, washers, replaced





** INTERIOR CONDITION **

Seats have new upholstery and frames have been powder coated. All dash controls, gauges, and lights in perfect working order. Australian version trucks did not come with a heater as original equipment. A heater from another 1974 Land Cruiser has been added.
New OEM parts include:

• Window regulators
• Door locks
• Dash knobs
• Transmission and transfer case boots
• Shifter knobs
• Dash knobs
• Brake and clutch pads
• Headliner
• Sun Visors
• Rear window weather-stripping
• Corner window weather-stripping
• All screw, nuts, bolts, washers, replaced

Powder Coated parts include:

• Heater
• Dash box cover
• Instrument cluster
• Hard top latches
• Door cover inserts
• Steering column


** MECHANICAL CONDITION **

This truck is powered by the original 6 cylinder “H series” diesel engine. The transmission is a 4-speed “H41 series”. Hi and Low range transfer case. Engine and transmission have been rebuilt. All engine, transmission, transfer case, differential, fluids and filters replaced. Axles, outside of brake drums, (anything that could not be powder coated) coated with POR 15.

New parts include:

• BF Goodrich All Terrain KO’S 31x10.50x15
• Old Man Emu Springs
• Old Man Emu Shocks
• Spring shackles
• Grease able shackle pins
• Major shim and gasket kit (front knuckle rebuild)
• Eight wheel cylinders
• Stainless steel brake lines
• Brake shoes and springs
• Parking brake shoes
• Glow plugs
• Radiator hoses
• Drive belts
• Tie rod ends
• Rag joint
• Hubcaps
• All screw, nuts, bolts, washers, replaced


Powder Coated parts include

• Frame
• Wheels
• Valve cover
• Battery holder
• Skid Plates
• Radiator screen
• Sway bar
• Spare tire carrier
• Bumper gussets

Tires or Tyres

16" split rims were 7.50R16 in most parts of the world. Don't know if you can still get the size in the US, expensive in the UK and not much choice but your truck deserves them. Very nice.

It's kind of hard to find a 7.50R16 and they will be bias ply. A 235/85R16 is the metric equivalent and there are lots of different radial tires to choose from.

Does this count as an Fj45 owner? Since I could not find a complete 45, I came across a very solid tub, no rust, some minor metal work on the rockers. It's a start, now I just need a few things to finish it
