Overdrive Remove Removal FJ40

I have a 1976 FJ40 with an overdrive I would like to remove. Attached is a picture of the unit. Does anyone know what type this is? What replacement parts will I need to buy to uninstall this? Where could I get the cover that was originally on this?
Any help would be great! Does anyone want it?

It looks like a Fairy (sp?) overdrive unit.

That is a Fairey overdrive. Remove the linkage. Drain the transfer/overdrive. Remove the six bolts from the back cover and then the cover. Use a 1/2" drive and remove the first funny bolt inside back opening. It was not come off easy. Then remove the locking, this is a thin piece of metal. Remove the next bolt that is threaded onto the end of the output shaft of the transmission. After that remove the two bolts and four nuts between the transfer and overdrive. Taking the two main pieces of the overdrive apart will make this easier.

Note That thin locking will get destroyed taking this off. You will not to find another one to use. I won't trust it again.

Do a search of fairey overdrive alot more information. The imformation your looking for is for the one piece tranfer case not the split tranfer case.


Certain parts for these can not be found like the synchros. That being said I would be interested if it's not a good working unit.

LITPs instructions are pretty good, but there's a little more involved. You'll also need to separate the t-case from the trans to complete the disassembly. Once you've pulled the rear section off as he's described, you can access the third of the 3 exterior bolts that hold the t-case to the trans. The other two are inside the side cover.

Once separated, Pop the imput seal of the t-case and you'll see the snapring that holds the imput gear to the output drive of the Fairey. You will need to separate them to get the Fairey out of the T-case.

I would assume the unit is damaged, or you would not be removing it. That said, I would still be interested in acquiring it to hopefully finish the partial OD I already have, and get it installed in my 45, which I drive a LOT.

Thanks Mark I remembered last night about the pain in the a$$ snap ring.


There are a few parts that were removed when the overdrive was installed. anthing that rode on the tail shaft of the transmission is gone. The input gear, PTO gear or spacer, rear bearing, spacer behind the bearing nut and washer. Plus the rear cover and bolts.
