Outer birfield c-clip?

'75 drum brake axle getting the minitruck brake treatment. I upgraded to 30 spline Longfield inners/outers at the same time. I'm using the Aisin lockouts from the minitruck.

The Longfield webpage says I do not need a martack with these shafts. The walkthrough I'm using from the web says no outer c-clip (the one on the very end of the outer birfield, just past the end of the spindle) is needed if I do the Martack. So, with Longfields and no Martack, do I need that outer c-clip?

Also, what's the bolt/washer for that is threaded into the end of the outer birfield? The minitruck I took the brake parts from did not have a bolt/washer, but the Longfields came with them and the lockouts fit with that bolt/washer in place. It doesn't look like that bolt holds anything in place. Am I missing something?

W/o the martack I would think you would need the c-clip. Don't have the martack, but that's my understanding.

The bolt you describe is to help you install that c-clip. I put Vice Grips on the bolt & pull it towards you as you try to get the c-clip on. Sort of like a 3rd hand.

I was missing a couple parts from the minitruck donor, so I made a trip to the junkyard earlier today. When I pulled the hubs off a 4runner, I found a bolt/washer that looks factory. Toyota puts this in there from the factory merely as something to pull on the shaft for seating the c-clip? That seems odd to me.

That bolt and washer replace the C-clip. You can use any of the three. C-clip, or martac, or bolt/washer. They all do the same thing. Use one of the three, whichever you want. If the c-clips fit and the longs have grooves for em, use em. I am guessing the Longs have no groove and provide the bolt/washer to provide for different spindle lengths.

I ended up calling Longfield. Turns out, you guys were right, although the Longfields do have a groove for the c-clip. The bolt/washer is necessary when using the Longfields on an otherwise stock FJ-40 axle, since Longfields are the length of minitruck birfields. The minitruck birfs are apparently a little bit shorter than the FJ-40 birfs, so the bolt/washer is used in lieu of the c-clip.

In my scenario, I swapped to minitruck knuckles, so I can use the c-clip and I don't need the bolt/washer at all.

The bolt/washer is necessary when using the Longfields on an otherwise stock FJ-40 axle, since Longfields are the length of minitruck birfields. The minitruck birfs are apparently a little bit shorter than the FJ-40 birfs, so the bolt/washer is used in lieu of the c-clip.

This is true of '76-'78 landcruiser birfs only. Later-model fj40s as well as 60 and 70 series all use minitruck-style birfs.

That is interesting, I wondered what the bolt and washer was for too. I swapped to mini truck knuckles and used the clips. I found the bolt/washer worked really well at "pinning" the c-clip in there against the axle while I worked it over the end with some needle nose pliers. I thought wow that was nice of them to put that in there to help with the install. I had no idea those were to be used on stock 40 knuckles
