Ok Chris777 has decided he is tired of the old carpet. Part of this was due to the window leaking and a leak near the blower fan motor.

So, the plan is to remove the old carpet, Repair any rust that may have occured, Rhino line it and install sound deadner. Yes, there have been many threads on this but hey at least you know I am not sitting around doing nothing!:grinpimp:

looking good :smokin: 2x on application?

It does both, It also makes for excellent adhesion for the new sound deadner going over the top off it. I used the HIPPO liner same stuff and it comes with everything you need and it only cost 78.00. the 1 QT kit did the whole floor board in 2 heavy coats.

so you put the rhino liner on there and then you're going to put some type of sound deadner? Then new carpet ? or just leave it at that? My front section of carpet really neeads to come out and hit the dumpster.

*&^% to many projects!!! Whats an idiot to do :)

You could leave it or put sound deadner over the top. We are using Secondskin Sound deadner for this. It is cheaper than the Dynamat. But the liner alone would stand up to anything you could throw at it. It would be perfect for someone who really doesn't care about carpet.

supposedly seal and peel roofing material is very very similar to dynamat. Except a fraction of the price.

Basically peel off the plastic and lay down cut sheets, then use a heat gun and hard roller to press the material down.

Hi, Randy is doing a great job. I think you might be right Brownbear about using roofing material. It is my understanding that Bitumen is a tar like material used both in the roofing business and the sound deadening business. But I went with Second Skin because they have a good price and excellent review:

Choosing the carpet, however has been a MAJOR head scratcher though.

1. Cool Cruisers of Texas no longer offers the Australian molded carpet that I had had my eyes on for years.

2. I have read horrible reviews of SOR's and MAF's carpet kits.

3. the ultimate solution, a quality molded carpet for the Land Cruiser does not exist, as far as I can tell. I have looked and looked and looked.

3. I have decided to go with the cut and sewn approach, because I want a carpet kit made from quality materials, even if it means that there are seams cut and sewn to make it fit. But you know what? even the finest business suits made in the world, and the finest upholstery in the world is CUT and SEWN and not molded. So I am going to go that route, instead of some cheap failed attempt at molded carpet.

my choice? I am going to "take one for the team" and order a carpet kit from Chester & Herod. In business since 1948, they specailize in floor converings for automobiles. Cliff, who has worked there 38 years, wrote me the following email when I asked him about carpet quality:

"i am the original pattern maker for the FJs'
IF OUR CARPET DON'T FIT WE TAKE IT BACK'
some of our vender's think profit and try a cheaper supplier
then they start to have complants.
We may not be cheaper but we are better.
Cliff."

If it is NOT what I expect, then I will ship it back. I will only lose 18 bucks to cover the price of shipping it back. I will keep you posted.

It is $425 for the kit and ths samples look good. Short loop pile. The color is a little darker than my faded 22 year old carpet.

If I went with SOR, it would cost a fortune to change my mind and ship it back because of all the shipping, handling, and boxing charges.

I will post pictures and report back when Randy is finished.

Next two things I have to do is have that rust spot he found, cout out and welded, and second, have some of the metal trim that holds down the rear carpet down, have it powder coated.

Chris - can you give me more details about the C&H carpet kit - like what pieces it includes, a web link, etc?

And PLEASE, PLEASE post your thoughts/pics once you get the kit. I want to buy one soon and was going to go the SOR route. $425 is on par with other places for a complete kit - especially if it is OEM quality. I already got my damplifier laid down and really don't want to put my nasty carpet back in.

Thanks.

I suggest this be stuck into the FAQ thread. Carpet seems to be a major problem, especially for the owners of older 60's.

Chris can you also post the amount of Damplifier you purchased and from what vendor?

Does the rhino help with in cab heat and noise, or just stop rust?

I would not count on the rhino to stop rust... unless all of the really correct and thorough prep and preventive measures were taken prior to Rhino application. I saw a 40 with it on the inside of the tub and the outside of the tub, that in some areas the Rhino was the only thing holding the thing together... it blew up like a baloon with the rust between the layers.

Just my 2 cents.

All the surface rust was treated prior to applying the rhino and the rusted through portion will be cut out and repaired. And yes I have seen the rhino liner hold a truck bed together that had rusted through underneath of it. Very good point srplus. Treat it now and no worries later:beer:

I don't know what others did, but I ordered 120 sq. feet (I believe it was like a 80 sq. ft pack and a 40 sq ft pack for about $350). I still have about 20 sq ft left. I would think the 80 sq ft pack would do real good job. A lot of people were real happy with just the 40 sq ft pack. I used the regular Damplifier, as opposed to the damplifier pro.

I did not lay it down in 100% coverage, but I did pretty close. I think more is always better, but I also think it becomes diminishing returns and the stuff ain't cheap. I think the doors and tranny hump are where you get the biggest benefits. On the doors, I did 100% of the door skins (part on the outside of the door) and 50-75% of the inner parts of the doors and still have the stock vapor barrier. The doors make a real nice thud now.

I did almost the entire floor. I noticed laying it over the factory soundproofing on the floor didn't add much. So, although I covered the stuff in the front, I didn't in the back seat area. I also used a couple sheets under the hood and it real made a difference when you shut the hood. I don't know that the hood sheets will help that much with engine noise, but it was really worth it for two sheets.

I still haven't driven it with all the carpet back in. The difference in vibrations is pretty good. The difference in overall noise was not as impressive, but I think that is more a function of not having all the carpet in. When I get the interior up to snuff, I will probably do a sounddeadener thread with better results. I might still order one of secondskin's under carpet products when I put the new carpet in.

Lastly, order the roller if you don't already have one. It was just a few bucks and makes the install A LOT easier. The better you adhere it, the better it will work.

theres a couple of places in oz that do moulded carpets for cruisers.

I got mine about 6 months ago;
-fitted it myself and it fit perfectly
-choice of colours (not just the stock grey and brown)
-choose between loop pile and cut pile
-comes in 4 sections; front-back-cargo-wheel arches, can order seperately.

only complaint is i had to cut the holes for gear sticks myself. which makes sense when ya think about it. (auto/manual, body lifts, pto etc)

they were more than happy to quote over email too
