Hi, Randy is doing a great job. I think you might be right Brownbear about using roofing material. It is my understanding that Bitumen is a tar like material used both in the roofing business and the sound deadening business. But I went with Second Skin because they have a good price and excellent review:

Choosing the carpet, however has been a MAJOR head scratcher though.
1. Cool Cruisers of Texas no longer offers the Australian molded carpet that I had had my eyes on for years.
2. I have read horrible reviews of SOR's and MAF's carpet kits.
3. the ultimate solution, a quality molded carpet for the Land Cruiser does not exist, as far as I can tell. I have looked and looked and looked.
3. I have decided to go with the cut and sewn approach, because I want a carpet kit made from quality materials, even if it means that there are seams cut and sewn to make it fit. But you know what? even the finest business suits made in the world, and the finest upholstery in the world is CUT and SEWN and not molded. So I am going to go that route, instead of some cheap failed attempt at molded carpet.
my choice? I am going to "take one for the team" and order a carpet kit from Chester & Herod. In business since 1948, they specailize in floor converings for automobiles. Cliff, who has worked there 38 years, wrote me the following email when I asked him about carpet quality:
"i am the original pattern maker for the FJs'
IF OUR CARPET DON'T FIT WE TAKE IT BACK'
some of our vender's think profit and try a cheaper supplier
then they start to have complants.
We may not be cheaper but we are better.
Cliff."
If it is NOT what I expect, then I will ship it back. I will only lose 18 bucks to cover the price of shipping it back. I will keep you posted.
It is $425 for the kit and ths samples look good. Short loop pile. The color is a little darker than my faded 22 year old carpet.
If I went with SOR, it would cost a fortune to change my mind and ship it back because of all the shipping, handling, and boxing charges.
I will post pictures and report back when Randy is finished.
Next two things I have to do is have that rust spot he found, cout out and welded, and second, have some of the metal trim that holds down the rear carpet down, have it powder coated.
