Hello Everyone,

Wanted to know where we can get original tires or close in appearance to the original tires that came with the FJ40?

I have a 1969 and I want to just keep it close to original as possible since that is how I got it.

Anyone know where we can get close to original tires or what looks close to the original tires??

I do not plan on lifting or changing my wheels and hubcaps.

thanks.

if you want to go as close as possible; toyota fitted bridgestone tires as OEM for their Japanese market (at least for their later models), not sure about the US market and/or earlier years..

the tire in the picture (press image from a Japanese brochure) says:
Bridgestone RD-703 STEEL
Steel Belt Radial 215 SR 15

have no idea if this tire still exist..

my 79 toyota 4 x 4 pickup came with those bridgestones on steelies. or maybe it was my 1983 toyota longbed 4 x 4 came with those?????:meh::meh:

I have an oem rim with a "snow tire" in the back yard..

For show or for use? If for show, I have original sets of Dunlop RK3s and Sno-cruisers that came on the 40s.

On another note, sorry I didn't get back to you today. I will try tomorrow, in between the 60 carb install and the 40 vac adv/electronic ignition install and the 3 walk in customers that called ahead. [pant]

Best

fj40

Thanks Mark,

I don't plan on showing it. I would like to get it close to original as possible since it is mostly stock except for the Man-a-fre kit put on it.

It has a header, weber carb, distributor setup from years ago from Man-a-fre.

I got an original 69 distributor(from a forum member local) and just bought a 78 distributor with the vac advance.

Here is some pictures so you know what I am dealing with:

Be great to get this back in shape, last owner let it sit for a few years. Its an Arizona fj so very minimal rust from what I see.

Thanks Mark!:) Hope to see you in AZ when you come out here.

old school tires

here's a pic of the old steelies wrapped with Gateway bias ply somethings.... 7.00x15
if you can find these, you're really lucky. gateway tire is long gone, and these tires seem like they have 36,000 miles on 'em, exactly what my odometer reads

I had a set of those Gateways on my HJ45 when I bought it. Hadn't run any bias ply tires for a while and forgot what HORRIBLE flat spots they had when they were cold.

Only good for making the wife's tits jiggle!:D

You can check out my tall skinnies next Saturday.;)

My 1972 FJ 40 came with Dunlop 7.60X15 RK 3s. It's a tube type tire. Here is a photo of my LC the day it arrived home in 1972 with those original Dunlops plus a close-up photo of the one that I used for a spare for 20 years and still have.

I see this was posted in March of 2011. It is now April of 2025 and I was just curious if it is still your daily driver?

You bet ya. In addition to the regular runs to Home Depot and the grandkids house, she and I have had some great adventures since that was posted. We've made three trips from Florida up to North Carolina for the Carolina Relic Run and a bunch of local trips to parks and to just explore. She even made the Trails End page of the November/December 2022 edition of TLCA's Toyota Trails magazine a few years back when we were riding the trails in the Uhwharee National Forest. :) She's still going strong and as dependable as ever. And she is too cute to leave at home in the garage.
