Could these blanks be cut by someone else other than the dealer? My previous owner changed the locks and the VIN won't help when cutting new keys.

YES ,

I can CUT them with your / A supplied Factory TOYOTA Key code if you like .................

does this answer your question .? 🤔

you should Post Photos of your Nice Black Plastic OEM Key you sourced from the dealer ..........

it would be interesting to see it and show everyone in the 80 Series community what all you have going on ,

YES KEY HISTORY is Neat ! :D
Wow, I re-read your thread and learned the subtle differences in key blanks, I need an original 1997 black key blank. PM on the way.

You mean in the US right now, you can actually get the key code from the VIN? So I could walk up to any 80 series in the carpark, read the VIN from the frame by peering under the wheel arch, walk into a Toyota dealer and with enough social engineering skills get them to give me the actual key code to cut a factory key for the vehicle? That's scary.

NO , not any more

you need 2 PHOTO state / federal issued ID's , Vehicle tittle in your same name NOT a spouse's to be clear , registration card and proof of insurance

who the H#LL has 2 photo different ID's ,?

not me ?

At least they've plugged that hole. In terms of two IDs, drivers license and passport would do it.

I'm a bit unclear, can you reproduce the laser cut keys too? 80s in Australia (all non-US?) used that style, though it was only used for the LX450s in the US.

And a second question, is there any way to figure out your key code without using the dealer? I have two keys for my 80, but I have no idea where I'd even start if I wanted a duplicate.

well ............

there NEW security tightening sucks for me to be blunt ,

i am a state of Maryland and state of Pennsylvania Licensed VEHICAL's ONLY LOCK SMITH ........

NO residential or commercial buildings or locks only automobiles locks and keys to be clear

i earned my Certifications in T-TEN College in 1998 .....

that gave me the credentials to pay the needed yearly fees to TOYOTA's T.I.S. Network , Toyota Information System .....

i was registered all Legal like if you follow me to use the system via a VIN # and secure the Toyota factory key code if still in the system ?

Now , NO private NON dealership parts dept. person can use that service , i NEVER abused it one time , but others did indeed , so the clamp had to be put on .......

i know why they did it , i just feel , much like COVID 19 took the life of my ENGRAVING SHOP owner boss where i made DATA ID Plates for years , this topic too was out of my hands and i hand NO say in the matter ?

oh well its over , at least i have a Far Superior Key Machine then most North American Dealers have .:D

MY machine is indeed capable of cutting on the FLAT or PROFILE cutting , however i have not even opened that door yet , it will be some time , i am working on learning how to cut the older Toyota FJ40 SINGLE SIDED key blanks now 1962-12/74

its proving to be a MOTHER F 'r .......

to figure out ?

YOUR KEY CODE is stamped on your passenger side Lock cylinder or RH one if you have RHD NON USA truck

you must completely remove the lock cylinder to extract and view the code itself

these are 1980-1990 FJ60 ones , the concept is the exact same ..........

you will have a W series code

Awesome, thanks for that info. I'll dive in and pull the key code next time I have cause to remove the door trim. When you're able to offer your service for these keys, I'd definitely pick up a couple from you.

That’s not the way it works.

@ToyotaMatt
So here's a question. I've got what appears to be the original master key, at least it looks just like the key you based your reproduction model on. It works fine, locks are definitely sticky and take some fiddling with to move.

That key does NOT work on the rear hatch lock though. I get no movement from the cylinder at all. Any idea what might be the issue there? I have a spare that looks like the 4runner style and that doesn't work on the trunk/hatch either.

I've got it going to the dealer today so maybe I can have them look up that info for me, if it takes recutting a new key then I'd happily order one of these reproductions.

Does it work in the glovebox?

Just tested both keys. Neither that I have work on the glove box either.
Sounds like someone may have replaced the ignition and door locks then, without rekeying the glovebox and hatch locks. Does the key work in both doors?

I suppose that is certainly possible, wish I knew for sure. Key works everywhere without any real issue in all locks but the hatch and glovebox. I initially thought it was just the spare/valet key and the spare I have was based on that. But looking at the first couple posts it sounds like maybe only the original master came with the rubber/molded plastic shell and the spares were metal(?).

Looking at the key it seems to be an original based on guidance earlier in this thread:

That key is certainly worn, maybe start with @ToyotaMatt making you a new one? Do you happen to have an ultrasonic cleaner or anything like that? The rear hatch mechanism is pretty easy to remove, and almost all the ones I receive for rekeying are completely gummed up. If you just pulled it out of there and spent some time cleaning it, you should be able to judge if it's the key or the lock.

Definitely not in the best shape. I don't have a cleaner but the lock actuator is bad in there as it is so once I do teardown there on the hatch I'll try pulling it and cleaning it as best as I can.

Either way, I may check with the dealership to see if they can give me the factory key codes or at minimum make me a new key with whatever they have to see if perhaps that works.
