Just got back from the Mojave Road and was taking the day to do routine maintenance. Discovered a milky oil in my separator.. a slight amount of milkshake in the radiator. Also drained the oil and looked in the container afterwards and there appears to be some coolant. Fortunately I had already planned an oil sample.. so that was pulled before I ever discovered the first indications of a head gasket failure.

Should the oil sample results confirm a bad head gasket.. the head will be coming off right away. Can anyone recommend a VERY good machine shop.. savvy on Land Cruisers to perform the head work. Willing to drive 300 miles any direction from the Portland, OR area. I only want it done correctly and willing to pay what that costs.

I've heard good things about these guys: landcruisernw.com I also know this place has been around for a long time and always has a wait list because they are so popular: Willamette Boulevard Service Center Google Maps

Hey FJP971.. thanks for the recommendation. I checked out the Willamette Boulevard folks and it appears that they perform repair work. Same with LandCruisersNW. I am looking for a machine shop to "overhaul" the head once I remove it. I am one of those guys with a bunch of gunk under the fingernails and dried out ugly hands from groping around inside engine bays!!

Heads Up in auburn WA did a solid job on my 1fz head. Very knowledgeable as heads are all they do. Ive used them for datsun, honda, toyota. Bit of a trek for you though

Got it. I wasn't sure how in depth these shops were but I know they are spoken highly of and work on LCs and Toyotas exclusively. Good luck!

Engnbldr's son Tod in Portland does machine work and it well respected for 22re parts.

I used DVC Machine out in Cornelius when I did my head gasket. 25k later and still going strong.

Thanks everyone for the responses! All are now on my list and I will go from there. Nice to have choices of several different options. Plus bookmarks for professionals in the machine work business. The last time I did HG work was back in 1980 on my FJ40 when I made the change from leaded valves to rotary unleaded compatible versions.

Hey Zonker Eastco out in Gresham did some work for me a while back and they've been around a long time.

By the way do you know a good gear shop in the Portland area? I'm needing someone who knows the E-lockers for an upgrade to 4:88s.

Like you I can do the R&R just don't have the tools or expertise for gear setup.

Also, id try calling garage 808 in Eugene and asking who they would recommmend for head work. Used to be they'd recommend Grant Springer but he's dead so I'm sure they have another competent source.

I had Over The Hill in north PDX do mine HG and head 120K mileage ago when my HG went. It still runs great at 252k, I think they sent it out you could ask them.

Dan's Gears in Sherwood

Canby Napa machine shop does great work, they did my 6bt and several other, imports subies and lot's of head work and reasonable prices

I definitely recommend Ron's Auto and RV in Vancouver, WA. There's a mechanic there named Ryan who is a Toyota tech. He owns an 80 and knows what he's doing when it comes to Land Cruisers. I've been using him for years. He worked on my previous 80 for 6-8years. Since I've had my current 80 (since May of '15) I've had him do several things. Everything he's done has been successful and done correctly. Give them a call and ask for Ryan S. (360) 553-4160
