Hello, I noticed your conversation regarding our batteries and wanted to offer some assistance. Our batteries have always been a SpiralCell, AGM design and have never been “gel” batteries, although some retailers may incorrectly advertise them as such, to generate more traffic on the Internet. In normal situations, our batteries can be treated just like a regular, flooded lead-acid battery. However, chargers with “gel” or “AGM/gel” settings should be avoided, because they will not fully-charge an Optima and could damage it over time.

If your application has heavy electrical demands, including winches, refrigerators or other similar items, we strongly recommend a dual-purpose YellowTop battery. RedTops are not designed or warrantied for deep-cycle applications, including winches. The quality of our batteries has always been excellent and continues to improve. Many of the “bad” batteries returned to us now are just deeply-discharged and work fine, when properly recharged.

Many battery chargers will not recognize or charge any battery that has been discharged below 10.5 volts and some manufacturers will void the warranty of their batteries, if they have been discharged below 10 volts. Deeply-discharged Optimas can be recharged with such chargers, by using the parallel charging technique described in this video- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dIoaL3DWWEg

Fully-charged, RedTops should read approximately 12.6-12.8 volts and YellowTops should read approximately 13.0-13.2 volts. If you can fully-charge your Optima and it can hold close to that level of charge for 12-24 hours, while disconnected from everything, it should be OK. If the battery holds voltage out of your vehicle, but loses voltage when connected to your vehicle, you may have a parasitic draw in your vehicle that needs attention.

All batteries spend their entire existence either charging or discharging, even if it’s only a very slow rate, while in storage. If a battery is allowed to sit long enough and discharge below 12.4 volts, sulfation will begin to diminish performance and lifespan. That makes a battery tender or maintainer a great investment for any vehicle that only sees occasional use. If you have any questions about our batteries, please don’t hesitate to ask.

OK here's a question Jim... How could you guys send those jobs to Mexico!? Optima was made in USA and we could be proud. No more I guess.

I sent you this PM Jim. Please forward to corporate or whatever...

"I have purchaced nothing but optimas for my vehicles for about the last 15 years. They have been a good quality product and they were made in the USA providing jobs for American families. Now that I know you guys have sent you manufacturing outside the US I will be looking to buy sometning else. I do not doubt that the Mexican plant can make a good product, and I'm sure your bottom line will look better, but sending our jobs out of country is just plain wrong!

I worked in a plywood plant for a large portion of my life and our entire plant was shut down due to cheap subsidized Canadian forrest products. We had to sell our home and live off our equity while I started from skratch. We moved several times and now after 5 years we are finally in a home of our own and starting to recover finacially. This was a real wake up call for me. While I cannot change foreign trade policy and my vote really doesn't count, I can change my purchasing choices.

I will never buy another optima untill you move your manufacturing back within our borders.

I will encourage every 4WD enthusiast I know to buy something else. Maybe if everyone stops buying optimas your company will understand how badly these types of decisions hurt America."

Hi cruiser88, thanks for the welcome. To clarify some of the confusion, Optima is owned by Johnson Controls. Interstate is a distributor of the products but does not own the brand. As for the manufacturing, the previous plant had very high quality processes and standards, and produced excellent batteries. The facility in Monterrey, Mexico, however, was built with brand-new equipment and more automated processes for greater precision. It’s a state-of-the-art facility and the Optima team is proud of it – so much that we even produced a video and shared it on our website- Contact Optima Batteries à Contact Us - Customer Service - Public Relations - Advertising

More importantly, we still stand by the same quality standards. In fact, Optima saw an increase in product quality after building the new facility. The batteries being made today are a reflection of our continuing effort to produce the best possible product and are the best we have ever built.

Our hope is that all of our retail partners will recommend YellowTops to customers who use winches, but we understand that isn’t always possible. Part of the reason for my presence on this message board and hundreds of others, is to help educate consumers about the importance of selecting a deep-cycle battery for a deep-cycle application.

toy4xfun, your truck appears to have a winch. If you are considering an Optima for an application with a winch (even if you don’t use it often), we strongly recommend a YellowTop. All new RedTops and YellowTops come with three-year free replacement warranties.

H8PVMNT, I did receive your PM and will certainly foward your feedback to the appropriate parties. If anyone has any other questions, please don’t hesitate to ask. I appreciate your interest in Optima!

jim i was running a yellow top, i had two yellow tops both went bad, the first one i had in there was 4 years old, i swapped it out for the one in my 95 4runner and it went bad at 5 years old, the problem i have is both went bad after using my winch, neither pull was a hard pull, i pulled my neighbors econo boxes up their drive way during inclement weather.
that said i plan on testing my winch to make sure that there is not a problem with it.

Thanks Jim!

Hey what is the big difference between the yellow top and blue top?

I have been running mostly blue tops over the years and seem to have had better success than alot of guys I know who have run red and yellow.

So tell me guys, who sells the best USA made non-spillable winching battery. I have three trucks with yellow-tops between 5 & 7 years old and the red-top in my 4runner (that does the most winching by the way) is over 9 years old. I have never had issue with the quality of Optima batteries, but I didn't know they were foreign made either. May sound funny for a guy that has a bunch of Japanese trucks to buy American, but in my defense, the trucks are all old and I wasn't pissed off about off-shoring back then. Is "Made in the USA" too much to ask?

no it is not, read through this thread you will see the batteries you are looking for , the diehard platinum is an agm made by Odyssey!

optimajim, talk to your boss about the price of his batteries and the guarantee on them even your red top does not match!

As many folks have said the older Optimas were great batteries. I had one for about 5-6 years when I pulled it out just because I was starting to not trust it. It sat in the backyard for two years, then I charged it up and installed it in my FJ40. It was there for another year before I pulled it out and installed a Sears Platinum Marine.

The Optima in my 4Runner which is about 3 years old is starting to show issues (11.x V in the morning). I have a winch, but it hasn't been used with this battery. In addition, all of my non-OEM accessories like my CB, HAM, and fridge run off an aux Odyssey battery. Sooner than later the Optima will also be replaced with a Sears Marine.

well pappy it boils down to this if optima claims to have the best battery than they should have the balls to stand behind it with a guarantee that is beyond what others battery manufactures offer!

H8PVMNT, the big differences between the YellowTop and BlueTop are the additional, threaded auxiliary top posts on the BlueTop and the length of the warranty (three years for the YellowTop vs. two years for the BlueTop). Internally, the batteries are identical (34M BlueTops are the marine version of Group 34 RedTops).

toy4xfun, we try to be as straightforward as possible with our warranty, because we know many companies use confusing warranties as marketing tools. Some companies may offer longer warranties to gain market share or even shelf space at a specific retailer, while others may offer long warranties, but begin pro-ration immediately. A multitude of exclusions that will void warranties for specific conditions may also be included, like batteries discharged below 10 volts.

If any battery fails due to a manufacturing defect, it is likely to happen well within the first year of ownership. If a new Optima fails within the first three years, we’ll replace it with no pro-ration. Our batteries are widely available, but we don’t re-brand or re-spec them for anyone, so you won’t find them everywhere. We hope the balance between the quality of our batteries and the length of our warranty is appealing to consumers. At the same time, we understand there will always be consumers whose primary concern is the length of warranty. Companies like Kia and Hyundai have done a good job of catering to that crowd, but there still seems to be plenty of folks who prefer other brands.
