I got my first Optimas about 13 years ago when I worked for the military. They were using them in humvees and the golf carts at the base I worked on. They were GREAT batteries, made in Colorado I believe. They lasted probably 8 years.
I have since gone through a few that didn't last 3 years. I gave up on them as their price didn't warrant their new "quality".

Not saying that maybe they didn't get that old quality back or not. I'm afraid to find out.
I found the top of the line gel/agm NAPA cheaper and just as reliable.

If they want their customers back they should give out coupons so it would be worth giving them another try.

just my experience. i've run optimas for decades because i don't like the idea of a cracked acid battery and, on my 40, i needed to mount the battery sideways. i've used almost all redtops, most of them were blems when purchased. of them all, one went bad within a year (because it was a blem, i was screwed, no warranty). i'm not nice to my vehicles or my batteries. i ran a single redtop in my 60 with a winch with no issues. i currently have a single blue top (can't afford to do dual yet) in my 80 and it has no issues winching it out.

that said, i have not bought any since they've gone to the mexico plant. the fact that it's no longer here in colorado is a big negative for me. i might be more understanding if they did it for pricing reasons, but it seems they've gotten to be outrageously priced, so what was the advantage of moving south of the border (besides lining executives pockets)?

jim i put the optima back on charge, it will not charge it to 100%, and as soon as i take it off the charger, it drops back to 10%, the most it will charge up is 15%. voltage is 10.7 volts. there seems to be a few cells that are no good any more.

I've had three Optima Red Tops go bad in the 2-3 year range. All were replaced under warranty at Sears.

This final replacement, I chose a Die Hard.

I wasn't out any money because they were all replaced for free, I'm just sick of the frustration.

toy4xfun, based on what you’ve said, it does sound like your battery is not recoverable. I’m sorry we weren’t able to save that one and I do hope you drop it off at a recycling center.
