I picked up a new axle housing today and it had obviously punched through the box on both sides. Dealership let me make the choice to take it, or order another. The only issue I can see is the ABS bushing on one side wasn't flush with the housing, which I think is correctable.

The last picture is of the threads and they appear to be not as sharp towards the end. This appears factory to me as it is on both sides and on all around for the first couple of threads.

Opinions?

BTW, this is the second axle. The first axle also punched through the box, but bent the end of one spindle. Toyota does a s*** job of packing...

Are they going to discount it for any damage? If not send it back. Don't pay full price for damaged or potentially damaged goods.

^^ This. You paid for a new part. Keep ordering until you get a new part.

The sad part is that part will be scrapped the minute it goes back to the parts depot. Back in the day, the dealership would "field scrap" the part once given the ok by the DSPM. Lots of "scrapped" parts found their way on my old 80 back in the early 2000's.

It is as close to perfect as I would ever ask for.

FWIW there doesn't appear to be any damage to the outer end/lip of the spindle tube ie: so not likely to have struck anything IMO

Looks normal to me.
but
It would suck for sure to build it up and find you had an issue.

Totally think it's fair to not accept it.

If I was concerned about damage, a discount wouldn't be a good enough reason to change my mind. A discount isn't going to make up for the hours and effort and frustration that would go into building it up, and tearing it down again.

If it's good enough to accept a discount it's good enough to accept at full price.

I don't disagree with anything said above but FWIW if the spindle took a hit hard enough to bend/tweak the spindle or the axle housing you would expect to see some sign of impact damage ie: to the outer lip of the spindle tube and/or the threads?? In the photos above there doesn't appear to be any damage (might help to see an end on view of the spindle).

Hard to tell if these (circled) are debris or dings??

You decided to purchase a new part, not a used part, not re-manufactured, not refurbished, not an open box, and not a factory 2nd. You paid for a new part, not anything else. They should provide you the correct, new part, well packaged, at no additional cost. That is what you paid for, that is what you deserve.

It is incumbent upon the seller to make things right. Now, the idiot who packaged it is certainly at fault and now the owner will be responsible for the nimrod's inability to understand that heavy parts that are machined to close tolerances need extra care in packaging. That person should be fired and you should get what you paid for, not something that came pre-distressed. I can't even blame the shipping company for what is shown, the seller knows that most of the gorillas who handle this stuff just don't care.

For the issue above seems like a simple fix could better protect the spindle ends, like thicker cardboard and/or a crush resistant spacer to fit over the ends of the housing??

Can confirm, this is actual footage of a package handler at work

At their prices, keep sending it back until they get it right. If they wanna cut you a GREAT deal, fine; replace whatever might be damaged. So I guess these axles are only bulletproof once they're on the vehicle?

For those in the Republic of Los Angeles, you can get an LC parts discount at Downtown LA Toyota on Figueroa. Best to go to the counter, ask for Frank, or tell one of the parts guys you want the Land Cruiser discount (~30%).

I negotiated this deal with their parts mgr and did exactly this when I ordered a new short block and head to avoid the shipping mess.

I'd reject the sucker outright and get a minty fresh one. Gl!

My apologies but I didn't receive notification that anyone replied.

This is the second axle. The first one had obvious damage to the spindle and it also punched through the box.

It takes about 4 weeks to get the axle, which is why I am hesitant to refuse this axle and order another. I ordered the first axle when Toyota had their 20% off + dealer discount back on July 2nd. I mentioned an additional discount to the parts guys and they just looked at me. It is no skin off their backs if I refuse delivery and request another one.

Because of shipping time. I want to keep this axle if it is damage free.

I do agree, I paid for a new part, I should get a new part.
I agree @Kernal Toyota has a packing problem and I talked to the parts guys about adding additional packing to protect the spindles. They just shrugged. They think it is made in Japan and shipped from there.

Any replacement axle will be packed the same way. The issue is that the axle is handled by many different parties with many different modes of transportation. I assumed Toyota is the only transporter, but no.

I looked closely at what @Kernal noticed but I don't see or feel anything there. There is a light coating of oil and it attracts dust. Both spindles look good to me.

@landtank has a good idea about threading on a spindle nut. I am not sure I have a spare but I will look. I am still accumulating my axle rebuild parts.

@greentruck I took a closer look at that ABS bushing. I assumed it was a very tight press fit. Nope, I was able to move it back with my hand. I checked the other side, which is in the correct location, and I can also move it with effort. So, I don't think it took a hard hit to move that ABS bushing.

Very hard to take photos of spindle head on

I see absolutely no damage other than some torn cardboard. I will go out on a limb and say that your nut will thread on perfectly. I am not going very far out with that statement. Even if the ABS bushing was a tight fit, it could be tapped back into place in about 1/197th of the time that it takes me to type this post.

Personally I would have threaded a nut on to check and tapped the bushing into place long before I would have stepped to the computer and reached out to dozens of strangers to solicit the totally anticipatable internet noise.

Your axle housing is fine. Your axle housing is good. Your axle is not housing damaged. Your axle housing is very very pretty. Your axle is as happy as a peach in cream or a pig in s***. You could (I guess) be "that guy" who insists that you paid for perfect and that includes the box. That seems kinda "Karenish" though to me. I don't know about you, but I throw shipping dunnage away after I remove the contents.

You axle housing arrived in perfect condition. The box got doinked. It happens. No amount of discussion here on mud is gonna result in Toyota changing their shipping and packaging approach. Looks to me like they should do better. (Some plastic wrap and extra cardboard over the spindle would seem like a profitable use of time and material on their part. Particularly considering that they had already wound up eating an axle housing over similar failure of shipping protection.) We all know that they will not. Not over this incident. Especially since, in the end... your axle is perfect. Asking for a discount because the box was ugly when it got here? seriously? Just don't.

If you threw a big enough fit at the parts counter I guess you *might* manage to get the guys to hate seeing you walk through the door in the future. Not the best result in the long term. I would say that it is a good thing to share this experience, especially since your first attempt did in fact yield a damaged product. Now that you have, ignore the howling on Mud and get out in the garage. Continue with your build with your beautiful shiny new OEM parts and be happy like the peach (or the pig) and let folks turn their internet fussing in other directions.

Just my 2 cents. :)

Free beer on a Friday? Not around here. I'm not sure, but there might still be some mud out back of Four Corners Lounge where they dumped all the Bud Lite a few months back if you are really desperate 🤔

More of a single malt man myself. ;)
