I'm looking at the 83 FJ in the classifieds.

https://forum.ih8mud.com/fj40-bj40/721556-1983-beige-fj40-ca.html

I like it, but I'm not sure how much work its gonna need based on the pics. What do yall think? Those with experience will know more than I will. Obviously the quarters need work, and then the wheel wells will too. For those that have worked with a tub like that, what did you end up doing and what did it run you?

Also, I find the 83 market hard to judge. Do yall think its a fair price? I figure it needs $5K to make presentable, $15K-20K for a proper frame off, which leaves me in the $50k range which is a lot, but for a restored 83 that might be market value, no?

Thanks for the help.

Nice looking rig, but 30k seems high. Although, we kept getting them till 84. If it wasn't an 83 it'd only be worth $10-15 k... Although the mileage is low if it can be verified.

Mileage is accounted for, the records on the car seem pretty thorough. If this was a 77 it'd be a 10K car, but since is a US 83 its worth more, just not sure how much more exactly.

I was thinking like $15-17. Very complete late Cruiser. You have to love original Toyota Decals.

If it was truly rust free it would be worth the asking price on eBay. I've seen better condition restored trucks go for $20K on Mud. Having said that, it wouldn't take more than $5K to fix the rust and spray it, but then there goes your original paint.

Personally, I would rather have a nice professionally restored truck than an original paint one with rust like this one.

You're willing to spend enough money that the word "rust" should only be mentioned in the description if it's then followed by the word "free".

ETA: After looking at all the pictures, the passenger side rear quarter looks like it was previously repaired and the rust came back. So who knows what's under the rest?

Proper frame off rebuild of that truck will far exceed 20K if you are paying someone else to do it.

Even for an 83 restored for $20K? I would have thought $40-50K depending on the quality of the work.

Yeah thats a nice rig, but what would that be worth as an 83? I appreciate the opinions but I'm not sure we are doing apples to apples here. I'm trying to find what is fair on this rig thats an 83 based on the work yall see. I've seen relatively clean 81-82 all original go for $22-26K that didnt have the rot in the corners like this one. But, the car looks pretty clean besides the quarters and the wheel wells, but you have to wonder what else there is which is what I'm trying to ask from those with experience. And then with that in mind we can put a fair price on this 83 rig.

Thanks for yalls help.

Rust is like an iceberg. You can only see the surface and a lot more usually lies beneath.

This exact rig sold for roughly half the asking price last year. That seemed like a fair price for a rare, fairly original, rusty 40 (I seem to recall some rot though on the rear floors too, if I recall correctly). 30k. Seems like a price meant for an eBay score to me. It's perfectly fine if the current owner doesn't want to give it away for free, but the price does feel high to me, even with the presumed rarity of an 83 40.

There has been a recent "run up" in asking prices for fully-restored or pristine original condition FJ40s over the last six months or so, probably due in part to several selling in the $50K plus range at the big auctions over the winter. This one is not fully restored or a pristine original.

In addition to the significant visible rust, the seller has identified a number of mechanical issues that need work. If you look at the list of items the seller lists as having "addressed" they are all fairly minor. If gr8ful is correct that this truck sold for half of the asking price last year, it would appear that the seller is just trying for a quick flip and profit. Nothing wrong with that if the market will bear it, but in this condition I don't think it's worth anywhere near $29.5K.

Was it advertised on Mud? Any link?
