Well, I can't get the twisted side out, so I am leaving it in :).

I have new coming from Christo (chromoly) to swap out the DS shaft.

The plan:

1. - wheel it mildly until I can operationalize step 2 on.
2. - source an unlocked 3rd
3. - buy an ARB
4. - buy 4.88s for unlocked third
5. - dissect housing, remove e-locker third.
6. -
7. - swap in ARB third
8. - sell e-locker third for profit to offset all expenses

NEVER FRIGGIN WORRY ABOUT THIS FRIGGIN PROBLEM EVER AGAIN.

If it breaks in the meantime, it breaks, and I jump ahead in the plans :)

Pros:
- I get back on the road by next week...Cullowhee here I come.
- I make all the events I wanted to make but couldn't

Cons:
- If it breaks, I will be in front wheel drive :)
- I need to lighten the load to ensure it survives a while (aka the swiss army knife status gets lowered a bit)

I think that the plan should be:

1. wheel it mildly
2.
3. source an unlocked 3rd
4.
5. buy an ARB
6.
7. buy 4.88s for unlocked third
8.
9. dissect housing, remove e-locker third.
10.
11. swap in ARB third
12.
13. sell e-locker third for profit to offset all expenses
14.

Wheel it and cary a spare third until it breaks.

what if it doesnt break where the tist is on the spines.. you will not be able to get the third out.... then you are doing surgery anyways. whatever you do get the twisted side out. not worth doing this twice. my side that broke had its break about right in the middle, not near the splines.

Honestly, I can swap out the entire axle for a non-locker with an ARB for the same price as fixing it back to stock with an e-locker once I cut up the lockered one and get the third out, etc.

What to do when it breaks? Drive home in front wheel drive :)

just beat me to what i was saving $$ to do; and that is to copy tirediron!

Super tire sizes, allready locked (and you allready have air) and major ground clearance.

I'm missing something here? What exactly is twisted that you can't get out? Heard you snapped two axles - but don't see what you can't get out to salvage and repair everything? Did you break it in the middle versus at the inner splines? Gotta be a creative way to drive that out...

Unfortunately I've got plenty of experience pulling out broken axle stubs, 3rds and birfs (you know how us posers break stuff going around corners too fast down here in South Florida) - if something is stuck figure out a better way to get it out.

If the e-locker is salvagable - I'd keep it over an ARB - unless you can't get an upgraded axle shaft for the e-locker actuator - and that is your goal. OR just don't try and hammer that heavy 80 up obstacles like that when there's a better line...

The rear e-locker is not better than an ARB. The rear design is flawed in that it has a locking collar that is outside of the PS side gear, and the locking mechanism is provided for in the spiders. This means that when things go wrong:

The DS drives force into the PS, twisting the splines outside the spider, inside the locking collar...aka "how things get stuck" and since there is no inspection plate the third can't be pulled unless you burn the collar off the shaft through the actuator hole, or cut the housing.

The ARB is superior in that there is no collar, so if you twist the spline, you simply pull the junk out and swap in new. No muss, no fuss, and no @#$$ collar to make you cry in your beer.

Noted on the line comment, I am gonna start winching.

I will once you offer to do it for me :)

I think I would even invest more and try and do it right if you offered too.

hmm, some big ol portals with 40" Iroks and a LOWER suspension...

don't tempt me damnit!

Full floater axle with OEM electric locker versus ARB - I'd post to the hardcore list to get a more factual opinion as to which is better. Pull it and fix it. I know a few folk who might dispute your opinion. Lack of inspection plate - that sucks - convert it just like several guys have done with front 40 axles - not a big to do, if you feel it is necessary - hope this thread isn't jinxing my 30 spline longs....

Winching - don't get me wrong, my favorite run on Schoolbus was with the STLCA jeep guy and a mini from Michigan (hell of a nice guy with his wife) in a built mini, and we said 3 tries and then winch - ran it in like 15 minutes - super fun. Buuuuut, I'd never winch that first obstacle - winching is for when there's not a line that can be made easily... That one is easy - and from what I've heard it still is.

no, it isn't :)

This has been discussed pretty well in the 80s tech section. Most people in the know, just using Slee as an example, agrees with Dan, in that the ARB is superior for the reasons Dan described.

Face it, I am right, you are wrong...neeener neeener! :)

Actually, in a lighter rig the e-locker is super, when you add the weight of a fat 80 on top it becomes a bad idea...different interpretations for different implementations! ;)

Hahhahaa! I gotta laught at this - my understanding is that two trucks went up, another two tried to follow and never made it past the first rock at the beginning of the chute... The first two didn't need much time - except for Jim's wheelie up towards the top - which, if you've hung aroung him long enough to know - he can roll on a flat trail, he just attracts that kinda trouble. Damn, I would have liked to have seen that to add to my pic collection :D.

Just so everyone understands this is sarcasm :flipoff2: and I'm just poking fun at the fat 80's and FJ's :flipoff2:. Am hoping that you don't winch - and I get to see the show this year at GMSTR - heck knows I'll put one on.

I'll have to agree with Dan, sure didn't look easy for the 2+ hours we were there trying to get 4 trucks up...2 made it, 1 broke, and the other, well...it's new ;) LOVE YOU RICK!

That suks and I'm glad to learn it know - I almost started to put an 80 e-locker in the rear, but luckily remembered in time that I would have had to ditch on of my poly axles to to get the extra splining needed. I have an ARB in the front - definitely pleased.

Again - as to inspection covers, if it's an issue for you (assuming you're talking about the 8" front only) - hack it off and weld in the bungs to convert it to a removable cover.

Even with a inspection cover, you will have to cut an expensive Toyota part every time. You might be able to cut the axle, but I doubt it. Just not worth it. Ask me, I have bought those Toyota parts three times before I swapped third members.

Bingo...ARB here I come...when the funds allow :)

That defitely suks. I had a deal confirmed on a rear 80 e-locker last month, and the guy sold it local. I was ticked at first, but totally saw it as karma when I remembed the conflict with the poly axle.

Maybe it was karma all along - heck knows I broke enough rears last year to last a lifetime ;-)
