I would appreciate it if you preceded this sort of post with an offensive comment warning. I have a right to not expose myself to traumatic material and you are currently violating my rights.

So a couple of weeks ago I put two new batteries in my 40. Unknown to me, the insulation on the top of one of the positive connectors was touching the inside of the hood... after some spirited driving, and towing of my boat, that insulation wore off... and the power of two brand new deep cycle RV batteries was unleashed in a fiery fury of flickering mayhem on my hood. And my wife got to experience it up close on her side of the truck.

First, the engine cut out, then giant sparks and lightning arcs jumped from the front to the rear hinges. We immediately jumped out and saw the current creating flames on the hood latches. It took me about 2 seconds to realize what the problem was and in that time both hood latches turned bright red like a piece of metal straight out of a forge.

Seeing flames as the current burned the paint on the latch connection point, I knew I had only one choice and I knew it would hurt. But not as much as the pain of standing there helpless as my baby electrocuted itself. I grabbed the hood latch and threw open the hood. Only a minor burn on my strategically used left hand. The handle part of the latch thankfully slightly separated from the still red hot glowing pin of death.

And ya know, I put some duct tape on it and drove home - no big deal.

So now we have "Biscuit" and "'Sparky" ..... how about the 60?

Lol. thanks man. I'm just glad I knew what the problem was. For a split second, my wife said "it's on fire" and I had the "oh s***, I don't have a fire extinguisher with me" moment. Which was quickly replaced by the "there's a gas station 200 yards away", then the "Oh, it's a short circuit" thought. That all happened in 2 seconds or less.

Damage is limited to a smaller than a dime sized burn circle on the paint on the hood, some burns on the latches and surrounding paint, melted wires under the hood, and a lifetime of burns from the community forthcoming. :)

Considering what happenned with it this week, I'm thinking Bursty? Or Pops? Or Hissy? Eileen? Up for suggestions...

You can see where the metal has heated and cooled. That pin was completely red and glowing. That's a lot of amps!

Oh and on a side note, biscuit hit the dyno and made 269hp/311lbft at half throttle on 7psi and went lean. So there is that. not too shabby considering stock it's 212 at the crank, I'm running 40" tires and it's with the front DS disconnected....

Damn!!! Glad you had the good sense to figure it out on the fly and not had the experience of watching your 40 burn down. You dodged a bullet, karma :)
 
In 8th grade my science teacher kept a gnarly, dirt filled lump of aluminum on his desk. It was all he kept from his Series II Rover after a similar incident went a bit further.

Seriously though kudos to you for figuring that out that quickly. I doubt very seriously I would have.
 
You would have. Small glowing spot on the hood, sparks, glowing pins. no steam or smoke initially... it had to be.. I'm just happy that didn't happen in my garage without me around.

Also just in. A picture of the short. My bad.... the position of the amplifier (4 gauge) wire was the issue. Had zero indication that there was a clearance issue. Sufficed to say, I redid the wiring and kept it all low slung and wrapped it up. Respraying a few coats under the hood.

My air status must be black I had ash coming down in the yard yesterday from the fire. Not today though today actually looks alot more clear than yesterday but the wind is blowing away from me to towards you guys.
