Va

Elkton VA, now. Near Harrisonburg. Moved here about a year and a half ago after a lifetime in the swamp country -- the land of my people.

You're in WestByGod? Whar?

Read (former speaker of the house)'s 3-part series about the Civil War this summer on vacation. Now THAT was a man's war, but it's a shame our country had to go through it. VA's a beautiful state - spent a few weeks there in college one summer. Drove part of the Blue Ridge Parkway in a raging thunderstorm with fog, and was amazed the road has lights embedded down the centerline (random trivia)!

I was more specific to the 60. One big problem was the fact that the seal between the transfer case and tranny would fail. When this happened the transfer case would pump gear lube into the tranny and over fill it. It happened to me and the tranny had to be pulled and repaired. This was so common that MAF built a transfer tube that when from the fill hole on the tranny to the fill hole on the transfer so the oil would drain back down. There is a bunch more I could tell you. But that was way before forums like this and the trucks still new to everyone so I was seeing problems first hand.

This forum and others like it are great at massing gobs of info that one can use to forecast problems and pro actively repair the truck before it gets out of hand.

You would have to show me that your 62 is more capable than my 80, I just don't see that.

Yup, have read about the seal failure but hasn't happened on mine and is not commonplace (no more than the HG or PHH), but probably an inevitability so won't be so proud to say "never".

Definitely agree on the benefits of mud... I would be lost on both vehicles without it and read it religiously for that very reason... When a problem comes up and my wife starts worrying, I just say "heck, just read about that the other day, I know exactly how to fix that." (Case in point, scary high idle on the 80 cured by cleaning the spring behind the IAC.)

As for your 80 vs. my 62, I don't think that was my comparison... It was my 62 vs. my "soccer mom" 80... OME+BFGs vs. running boards...

I think the 70 would offer a good compromise :grinpimp:

Well,

My personal opinion is that every single 80 series landcruiser is plagued with problems......

They handle like crap, eat brake pads, blow gaskets, break birfs, have driveline clunks, drink gas and are generally the worst vehicle put out by a major automobile manufacturer since the ford pinto.

With that in mind, I woul highly suggest the 60 or 62 it is a vastly superior design and you won't have as many of the annoying CEL problems.

Or, if you want to be really cool, get a pig. But by no means by one of these start up rattling, slow power windowing, seat cracking, birf clicking, wire harness shorting, egr plugging, radiator cracking, tailgate bending pieces of junk.

... tailgate bending pieces of junk.

This was fixed on the later models with a reinforced tailgate. All the other stuff is true though. How can we possibly tolerate driving these things I'll never know. ;)

You forgot the mushy brake peddle. ;)

Oh yeah,

And the non working dash lights, sub standard AC, PISS POOR radio, contact eating starters, leaking heater hoses and self loosening wheel bearings

Just so that if anyone looks to this thread for fixes for this stuff by searching there are solutions to fix just about every bitch and moan out there...

Handling = OME suspension upgrade or better
brake pad wear = new rotors & 100 series pads
head gasket = updated OEM gasket from Dan & time & beer
broken birfs = Longfields replacements
driveline clunks = New U joints (most of the time)
drinks gas = 5,000 lb rolling brick sucks gas - live with it.
low power = TRD supercharger or Slee or MAF turbo
wimpy front bumper = Slee, ARB, etc... replacement
wimpy rear bumperettes = Slee, Hanna, etc... replacement
wimpy steps on sides = sliders
CEL coming on repeatedly = EGR valve & O2 sensors (90%)
dummy temperature reading = Raventai mod
wimpy headlights = Slee harness & JD bulbs
cargo flying about = drawers & Milford
seats don't go back far enough = seat mod
overheating = new radiator &/or new waterpump &/or flush & fill
birfield clicking = repack and side swap
parking brake not working = dissasemble, de-rust, replace broken bits
towing big loads = Kaymar or DrawTite w/ load distribution hitch
tires = tire faq
locking center diff in high = CDL switch
unlocking center diff in low = Pin 7 mod & CDL switch
rusty POS roofrack = remove it and bodyshop or LineX (or similar)
leaking coolant under the driver's foot = PHH
leaking coolant under the passenger's seat = rear heater lines
need more juice = dual battery install
wet floor smells like dog in front = clogged sunroof drain line
wet floor smells like dog in front II = windshield seal
wet floor smells like dog in front III = clogged AC drain line
wet floor smells like dog in 3rd row = clogged sliding rear window drain line
mushy brakes = bleed the brakes better
more like Pinto = aux fuel tank where spare used to sit

Did I miss anything? I've only dealt with about 1/2 of the above so far... These trucks are just big tinker toys. Time and money can cure a lot of the 'issues'.

Dude, whispering

Shut up, you aren't supposed to give the answers in this thread

Clearly, your "irony" sensor is malfunctioning. Add that to the list.

CDan, can you post the "smart shopper" price for a new one of these sensors?

Yeah yeah yeah... I had figured the tard baiting had gone on long enough though. So, just in case someone searches this thread 6 months from now for actual tech help I thought it was time to throw it in.

Apparently you both missed the Pinto reference at the end. :-)

I didn't make it to the end. Your post was too long.

Boy, you make one comment....

I guess a head gasket design that tends to blow is top-shelf. Ferrari should study it. My Momma's Ford Escort did the same thing.

You boys are so cute when you're offended it just makes me all warm inside.

(Notice I didn't say "piss-poor").

Your pal,
Rev. Coyote

P.S.: Here's a million dollar idea. Someone should produce an aftermarket iron head for the DOHC Crusher engine. I know I'd buy one.
