I'm doing a side project, mobile lawn mower/lawn equipment repairs. I need an on board air system that is capable of powering air grinders and an impact gun as well as smaller tools like tire air chucks and air nozzles.

I'm looking for a 12V system as my engine bay is going to be pretty full with the diesel and keeping A/C.

I'm hoping to mount the AC compressor in the engine bay to reduce the need for huge gauge wires running thru the rig and with tools/equipment the trunk will already be pretty full.

The remote tank will probably best be mounted somewhere under the rig.

The compressor needs to be reliable and able to handle the under hood temps.

any suggestions.

I would try to fit a York belt-driven compressor somewhere. I've had one for 12 years and it has been flawless. Keeps up well with all my air tools using a 3 gallon hot-dog style tank mounted under my truck.I don't believe any 12-volt unit could keep up with a York set up.

I think these guys have the best off the shelf products for OBA: Products : Extreme Outback
I have the standard 12V version, but they now carry serpentine belt models too for the same $$$.

Tech support is also very good - George knows his products inside and out. I had a bad pressure switch the first time around and he replaced it for free and sent me an upgraded check valve.

Also, they are another GSMTR sponsor we should support.

i'm already running AC on the rig, and it has a huge internal PS pump so extra pulleys/belts are not going to work and i can't ditch AC.

12 will be the only way i can go.

I will look into the outback system

It isn't going to happen. For an air grinder your going to need at least 9-10 cfms at 80-90psi. No way a 12v unit is going to give you that.

You might want to reconsider a belt driven system.

CO2?:meh:

You could figure refilling in it in your operating budget like you do fuel, etc. I think I pay $18 to fill my 10#, you can get good deals on 15# tanks, and they should run a good bit of tools. TRDParts4U has a good deal on The Source setup.

I have a 10# tank and love it but I don't know how long it would last with constant use powering air tools...

i'll be using it to power a grinder for sharpening blades, it would have to have a huge fuel tank for doing several mowers with 2-3 blades each, usually spending 1-5 min running the tool constantly depending on how dull the blade is.

And i'm too lazy to take a c02 to refuel.

Well, considering you can fill up 26 32" tires from 0 to 30 PSI, I would say that it should run an air grinder for a while. As long as you don't use cheap air tools. Cheap air tools use more air, than quality tools.

But if you don't want to have to fill them up, then get a york comp. in there somewhere.

Or jsut mount a generator on your landscape trailer.

there are 12v units out there that will run 8cfm at 100psi with no storage tank made by Oasis. I hope i don't need anything that big being that i'm planning on using a storage tank system.

I just don't have the ability for any other accessories under the hood. I'd love a belt driven system. I just don't have room for it even if i did add extra V grooves to my crank pulley.

If your going to use a tank to run air tools for 5 minutes your going to need something like a 60-80 gallon tank. Don't know where your going to put that.

Maybe you out to look into a second battery and use an inverter and just have your alternator built up.

A 20# CO2 tank has about 160 cf of air I believe. So that will run an AirCAT die grinder for 20 minutes.

Electric is 100% efficient, and air tools are 50%, jsut keep that in mind.

Very true, but I never count on my setup being a primary source for air tools. It's there for emergency as far as tools go.

As a mobile shop, I think he'd be disappointed in a 4cfm unit. Extremeair also has a Magnum model that does 6 CFM @ 0 psi, and can maintain 2.6 CFM @ 100 psi.

The standard does 4cfm at 0psi, but no specs listed at working pressure. With 5 gallons of reserve at 150psi, it gets the job done out in the middle of nowhere. It operates my impact wrench well enough to change a wheel and is mostly used to inflate tires. I have used an air grinder with my setup too and it works best in short bursts of about 30-40sec.

He needs a PTO option ;)

Get a portable gas-engine compressor. Had a 8 HP Kohler for years that I ran 3 nail guns with and had plenty room for more. There is no way a 12 volt compressor will meet your needs.

i don't do landscaping. However, i do repair land scape equipment.

I'll look into a small portable generator. I'm a dealer so i should be able to get a floor unit pretty cheap. I've got a small portable 120v air compressor that would take care of my needs for airing tires and impact guns.

would also be handy on camping trips, i like multi use equipment.

why not go the 12v or 18v milwaukee or dewalt route for impact and grinders, then have a compressor for filling tires,,,

im sure with the 12v tools you could rig some leads off the vehicle battery....
