I went with a Costco cheapie Masterflow portable 12v compressor and rigged it up in a large milk crate for portable compressor and tank combo. I got the 2 gallon tank from a neighbor who was going to throw out his Campbell Hausfield tiny portable compressor with tank. I came up with my idea from the following links.

I went with the puma 12 volt unit with 1.5 gallon tank.

Don't expect this setup to run any heavy duty air tools. It'll fill your tires and give you a couple of good bursts on an impact wrench. If you're running an air locker it would do the job there as well. I wouldn't expect anything more out of it. If you're looking for "the" setup, you can search around on here and come up with a ton of other solutions.
