I have a 1984 FJ60...

I just purchased a 2” ome, medium load lift with anti inversion kit. Will 33” tires rub if I do any wheeling or should I stick with 31”

I have no lift and 33"s on mine, not a single problem with rubbing. Though i did put helper springs in the back since i am pushing buying new leaf springs till its warmer out.

Still have the original but plan on changing it to a 5 speed soon. Is there something you recommend.

If you have a 4 speed, get 31’s

If you’ve got a 5 speed or will do it really soon, do 33’s

Also pay attention to tire sizes. My 33x10.5 BFG tires were really 31” tall.

With the OME suspension on my '86 I went with 70-Series 16" wheels (they retain the stock look) and BFG 235/85R16 ATs. I like the tall skinny look. The tires are about 32". It has a 3FE, H55f 5-speed, and FJ62 4.11 differentials. I really like the combination.

I have the same combination as you: Original 4spd, OME. The 5 speed would be loads better but the 4spd with 33's is fine on mine, which I drive daily. The rubber overdrive you get from 33's is a real thing so coming from 30's the 33's helped me a lot. I would be much more concerned with the effect on drivability the tires have rather than whether they rub when choosing tires. These trucks are such dogs to begin with that any extra slowness you may see from 33's is fairly imperceptible, at least to me. I think 33's look better with the OME setup if that counts for anything. Fills in the wheel wells better than 31's. But that's just me. But to answer the question you actually asked here...the only rubbing I get on mine is against the tail pipe driver side rear. Seems to be the way my tailpipe is routed right by the tire. Other than that nothing touches. HTH.

I second what @Robert Franzke says. I recently changed from 31” to 33” and Robert’s experience echos mine. I have 285/70 17r KO2 wit 17” TRD wheels. I did have to adjust my drivers side steering stop because the tire rubbed on the leafs a tad. I have the same OME med/med setup.

Im running the same suspension and have 295/70r17 toyo rts on mine. Toyo says they are 33.3 by 11.8, I get the slightest kiss of a rub at full articulation and full turn.

I bet that is an amazing combination for drivability.
Sure is, especially for the type of driving I do in the Four Corners area of the Southwest. That combination keeps the engine rpms below 3,000 at 75 mph, plus it gives you a very decent low range plus added ground clearance while 4-wheeling. Much better drivability than my stock '84 FJ60 with BFG 33X9.50R15 ATs.

Not a lot of stop and go because I don't live in a place with much traffic, so the low first gear isn't a big deal starting from a stop. I don't usually start in second gear, mainly to give the clutch a break.
