Make sure to apply a little FIPG onto the splines like the PO did. There's a 50/50 chance that you'll leak a little 80W90 past the splines and out the nut that holds the flange on if you don't. Sometimes they do. Sometimes not.
Thanks Dave! I may do that later, may replace the nut since I reused the old one. Went for a drive this morning to get the oil hot, came home and don’t see the usual “rust protection sheen” on the housing, if you know what I mean.
More transfer case seals, this time the front ones. Replaced the lever seal and boot, and the front drive seal. The shaft was nasty, so well worth the time. Once I get the new nuts and washers will put it all together
Set the 4L first to remove the flange nut.
Clean and emery paper, removed all the old crud from the shaft
Just an idea of how bad the old seal was
Now all in and waiting on flange nuts and washers tomorrow
Replacing the transfer case idle shaft o-ring wasn’t as simple as I thought. Had to buy 3 of them to make it work! The first time the case acted like a cheese shredder and sliced off the top of the new ring.
Well, has been almost 4 years with it and for the first time there are no leaks from the fj. So far all the seal replacements have worked, big thanks to Cruiser Outfitters, they always have the parts and advice. I have thought about selling it and make room for a new Land Cruiser….but I love this thing
This may be the last post as I am putting it up for sale, have replaced it for a newer model. Maybe I will become a politician after all. My emotional support vehicle …..has been a great journey
The new guy loaded the trailer wrong. LC goes in front and Rover goes on trailer. Congrats on the sale, Izzy. I'll sure miss seeing that truck around town.
