A good honest opinion? Of Old Man Emu?

Not being a smart ass, but the internet is full of them...?

It's THE lift if you need moderate, expedition level. Like thousands of miles from the nearest town expedition... Them Aussies don't mess around.

I've read this one a few times...

Petersen's also did one and spoke extremely highly of it.

Hey! Behold... the power of the internet!:D

Very happy with mine, 2nd truck these springs have been installed on. I think I have about 100K on these springs. Rears are doing great, but the fronts are starting to sag. I will replace them with the same thing.

No contest... Not even in the same ballpark.

eack! Gross! Those are WalMart suspensions.

As far as leaf spring OME lifts... I'm pretty sure the heavys are just another leaf or 2 on the existing light or medium spring pack.

You can custom Taylor the OME lift to suit your needs. The OME is a multi spring pack with around 7 leaves IIRC. You just add to, or take away from to get whatever suspension you want to suit you.

You should be able to clear 33's. And if the springs are too light, just order the heavy leaves.

I'm pretty sure the Med is 2 1/2" and the Heavy is 3"... But the ride is firmer. It's not designed to be that way, additional lift. It's designed to be weighted down to a 2 1/2" overall lift.

EDIT: Oh, and another thing... You'll notice the OME kit comes with shackles... It is a kit. Most yer WalMart stuff is only springs, designed to work with your shackles... Seriously limiting a functioning kit.

The OME stuff is designed to work together. Shocks > Springs > Shackles...

And that's more than just the leaves you get with other lifts.

well i plan only buying the leafs and bushings. so if i can clear my 33s i get the shakles later i guess . unless there is something wrong with that

I have big respect for OME but I also know how it is to need to hit the trail on a budget. I still have one of my favorite trucks from back when I couldn't afford to supersize a McBurger. I got a set of 5" Skywhacker springs that came with shocks for $400, a used set of tires for $200 & I put it all on my $300 pick-up & raised $900 dollars worth of hellll @ Katemcy, Gilmer & every other place I could get to on a weekend. If you are poor don't be afraid of those cheap springs, they are going to ride rough, and once they feel like they are getting broke-in they will settle about an inch & a half. If you are planning to play hard then get some cheap springs & suffer a little bit while you save up for gears & lockers. That way you can spend every weekend enjoying your truck.

I forgot to attach a picture of Spot. This truck serves as a yard mule/ornament/drivers ed vehicle for kids & when we do finally get time to go krawli'n more often than not Spot goes too. Old, cheap, & still pretty darn salty on the trail. My 4runner is a lot nicer on the highway, but when I am laying on my side listening to popping glass & dying ice chests I swear I'll stab the next guy I hear talking about articulation. Keep your truck low & buy the springs you can afford

I think I know a better solution for you...

Rears up front. You can search the FAQ just as good as I can...

And I will TRY to find the pertinent info for ya...

I think it lifts the front a conservative amount, and it moves the axle up 2"...

Let me TRY and find it...

"First, these springs offer a main leaf and a second leaf with the military wrap for added safety & strength. Secondly, when used as a front spring, the center pin position moves the axle forward 2" from stock, offering better tire clearance and the ability to run less lift and a larger tire. Third, these springs are roughly 2" longer than the stock Toyota solid axle front springs. A longer spring like this generally means more droop."

Here is a picture of my OME "light" kit on my 85 4Runner. I'm really happy with the ride quality, although I don't drive the truck a ton to really break it in. I am running 32's and I wouldn't want to go any bigger personnally but it's your call. FYI, I have managed to rub my 32's a little while off roading which is why I wouldn't go bigger. A one or two inch body lift would go a long ways though but those are kind of ugly IMHO. Take a look at buying the kit from:

Cruiser Outfitters

They sell the newer EMU Dakar which I am very happy with. This place had great service and their budget kit was very managable for someone looking for a great system at a good price. What I like most about the kit and what I was looking for was a direct bolt on kits with no midification. Ride quality was most important to me which I also feel I've achieved. To be honest, it was a 2" Rancho kit that I removed from it. I hated the ride...

Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

I've had my OME kit on my 85 Xtra Cab and I love it. I'm not getting any younger and had a hip replacement 2 years ago. I only have 31" tires on it, but it would clear 33's no problem. I am not running the heavy, just the medium. I don't rock crawl this truck. It's a nice backup for the FJ40, which is set up to be much more capable. Which, by the way, has an OME suspension kit too. Perfect for my needs, maybe not for everyone.

I've had OME suspension on my 85 4Runner for over 10 years. I finally sacked out the original set of springs and had to replace the packs with the Dakar line from OME.

Overall, I like them okay, but for the type of off-roading I do in this truck I would buy something different if I had it to do over. For an expedition type truck with a lot of pavement and dirt road driving, the OME is great. For big rock work, they are just okay. You can see in the attached pics that I'm pretty limited in my down travel due to the short (stock length) springs. I usually can get over the obstacles, but a longer travel setup would work better for me on the Colorado trails I run.
