Has anyone removed oil thru the dipstick using a siphon pump or oil extractor (see www.griotsgarage.com) for LC 100 V-8? - I've been using it for BMW - gets just about all of the oil out - avoids removal of drain plug - good for alternate oil changes

why not drop the plug? sounds like more work...

Uh ......................... Ditto. :D

I have one of those siphoning thingies and it works absolutely GREAT on european cars where the oil filter is located on top. Easy, fast and no mess. But on my 80 as well as a 100, the filter is located below and you have to get under the vehicle anyway to catch the filter oil--so there's no advantage. Furthermore, I remember the oil capacity of the 80 to be more than the siphon reservoir.

I would only use this method with a marine engine that is intended to be able to be drained in this fashion. That being said, I still drain my boat via the pan drain. I have a banjo fitting in the pan and a silicone hose that I pull out through the transom plug.

I understand all of the new mercedes models have gone to no plug oil pans and all oil changes require the siphon from the dipstick. I think Mercedes is doing this to increase their dealer service revenue. I think it sucks :)

On some of the newer models, Mercedes also has a dielectric sensor in the oil pan that is supposed to measure the type and amount of contaminents. It factors that in with the type of driving and tells you when it requires an oil change. I don't know how well it works but the concept sounds great to me.

I much prefer the "top-sider" siphon method of changing oil. Fewer rags, no jack nor jackstands needed. No chance of forgetting to reinstall the drain plug.
