I may be missing something, but i just put a 2F into my 72 FJ40, and i was snooping around the forum on how many quarts of oil I should put into it when I changed the oil. I found a thread that said I need to put in 8 - 8.5 quarts of oil. Well, I did that and the dip stick read almost double the full line on the stick. I thought that perhaps the stick was somehow wrong, well, I started it and immediately fouled some plugs because there was too much oil. I know how to fix the problem, but what am I missing?

Did you drain the old oil first?

Did you change the filter?

Your 72 FJ40 should take 8.5 with a new filter and 6.5 without a new filter.

This comes from the Chilton Manual # 68600 that cover Toyota Pick Ups, Land Cruisers and Four Runner from 1970 to 1988.

To my knowledge all the 2F's take around that much. There is a little bantering if between 8 or 8.5 depending on if you swap the filter or if you have an oil cooler, etc.

I didn't change the filter, there was only about 20 miles on it when I changed the oil. I went to a heavier weight oil in hopes to stop it from blowing so much smoke. I guess thats where I went wrong. Thanks

Besides replacing the fouled plugs, do you think I did any other damage? I only ran it for about 1 minute.

Check the PCV valve, you may have blown a bunch of oil into, and past it, check the aircleaner, too.
