Hey guys,

Just installed a "new" 3B into my BJ this weekend and I have found two problems that I hope you guys can shed some light on...

Waterpump - it leaks like a siv (seive??). I put a new gasket on and cleaned up both surfaces really well. The new gasket is from the dealer however the waterpump is off my other 3B of the same year truck. Am I missing something there?

Oil Pressure - I have none. Full of oil, filled the filter before I put it on (its a Fram PH8A). I pull the pressure senor off and nothing spits out when I crank the engine over. This engine is out of my wrecked 60. I had to replace the front timing gear housing (not the cover, the whole thing). So to do that I had to remove the oil scavenger lines from the oil pan as well as the cam/lifters/rockers came out. This engine was running fine before the truck was smacked. Any ideas for this one?

I followed the procedures by the FSM. I checked the engine out and it seemed to be alright for the switch. If the block was cracked somewhere, would I get a tiny bit of pressure?

Thanks guys

Geoff

The oil pump is in the front timing gear housing. Are you sure that the pump gears are actually in there?

The housing came off the 3B that died so it should be in there. I would assume the gears couldn't fall out?

Thanks Charles

I'm sure there is an oil pressure relief on these things somewhere probably a spring loaded valve of sorts. If that is failing open you would never build the required pressure. I'll look it up if i have time maybe u have yourfsm handy?

I think the water pump can only leak from the mating surface, a pin hole for when its screwed, and through the bushing so one of those is the culprit. Have a real good look to see where its coming from and then remove and fix the problem thats all you can do

I just changed my water pump friday. I've been skeptical of the oem metal gaskets but they seem to do fine. It could also be leaking from the back plate of the water pump. Were the phillips screw tight?

Anyway, probably not a help but good luck.

if the bearing is gone then it can leak out the front past the seal, or the seal could be kaput...
a usual sign is fluid driping off the left hand side front of the engine...
cheers

Yes, there is a spring loaded valve there as well, I hadn't thought of that. Good thing to check out.

Yep, checked the relief valve, its there and works the same as the relief in the broken housing.

As for the waterpump, Toyota gave me a paper gasket...not a metal one. I should have said this one before.....it seems to be leaking from the bottom back of the pump. Even with liquid gasket she still leaks.

Thanks guys, any more ideas?

Really Appreciate the help

are you sure it isn't leaking out the front past the seal down the inside of the pulley then down the bottomof the water pump?

I'd tend to agree with Wayne on this one. When mine failed it was near the bearing past the seal. I replaced the unit with a new one and made a gasket. In addition, I used the liquid gasket stuff and I've had no problems. If you are getting ANY leaking from near the pulley you should pull that unit and get a new one.

Someone once told me these 3B waterpumps are rebuildable. Anyone know if this is true? If so, I'd like to rebuild my old one and use as a spare.

Are you priming the engine with glow plugs in?

After a rebuild I like to prime the engine with the glows and injectors out for little resistance until I see good pressure on a mechanical gauge on the oil pressure sender location.

Very true wayne, I should have looked into that one.

Radd- how much do you have to spin it to prime it? Would getting some oil down into the pump from the oil filter help with the prime? Ever done it?

Thanks

Not more than a minute usually, ususally seconds in fact.

Note to self... when changing the waterpump make sure you tighten the hoses sufficiently. I lost the upper radiator hose and all the coolant. Good thing I noticed the gauge but the wife had to come rescue with water and coolant.

Yeah, I've had this thing spinning quite a bit. I'm heading back out to the farm tonight/tomorrow so I'll take a whack at that waterpump and I'll try getting some oil into the pump from where the oil filter is.

Thanks guys, will report in a day or two

Isn't the relief valve slightly above the bottom level of the oil pump gear housing? When you have the spring and ball out ensuring they work, put some engine oil in there (ala pump can) to help the prime.

hth's

edit...and get a mechanical oil pressure gauge, remove the stock sending unit, and use the gauge when priming.

10 pts to Greg! I stuffed the end of a 5 foot hose into there and filled it full of oil, she primed right away. I also pulled the water pump off and I'm going to pull it apart and see if I can get the parts for it tomorrow.

Now that its running, I'm thinking a fuel problem....I'll prime the pump, it'll run for a good ten minutes perfectly, then it coughs and sputters and dies. I can suck from the tank with the primer pump. I have yet to dip a line into a jerry can and run off it to narrow it down....BUT ITS RUNNING!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeehaw

Correct me if I am wrong but I thought the 3b engines as well as the 1HZ - 1HD series were self priming oil pumps. If that is the case why would you prime it, or are you saying you are just flow oil through engine before running it.

Thanks,

Michael
