I put in my distrib and was pretty sure it was all the way in. So I wanted to make sure I had oil pressure and I have a 79 2f in a 71 body.

I wasnt sure on the wiring hook up for the oil pressure sensor and stuck in a gauge (on the oil cooler). still nothing

next I lined up the oil pump drive slot installed the dizzy and checked to see if the slot rotated--it did but I want to be sure cause the dizzy putting pressure on it could do that

I pulled the oil filter off and saw a nice flow coming up into the filter so now I know the dizzy must be engaging the pump right?

I wasnt getting anything out of the OPS port but now I figure that must mean the filter has to fill first

Do I have that right? I am thinking I will be okay to crank it up and look for oil pressure after start

Is that about right?

I cant crank it right now cause I just got my dizzy back and the cap was cracked so I am waiting for a new on:rolleyes:

Thanks!

It took me a few tries to get the dist seated all the way. It was obvious looking at the clamp flange that it was not quite there...last 1/4" or so took some fanagling. I had to spin the oil pump with a screwdriver a lil bit to get everything lined up and all the way seated.

oil pressure

I guess what I am saying is

Is it normal not to see pressure on the gauge when cranking without starting?

I am assuming the dizzy is seated all the way because it pump oil up to the filter--I removed the filter and watched it.

I had put a gauge in place of the sending unit but didn't get a reading nor any oil gushing out under pressure from the sending unit with it removed while just cranking the motor over with the starter

Have a look at the pics that seems to be sticking up a little but not sure since I seem to be getting oil flow to the filter?

marks

also there seems to be witness marks from the clamp in a corresponding spot but I am not relying on that! If I remember correctly Oil Press usually rises rapidly after start but you dont see it on the gage prior to starting to motor ---can anyone confirm that?

Can I get a couple opinions on this?

Thanks!

That is correct. I would say if you don't have pressure within 5-10 seconds of start up - there's a problem. If you are just cranking the engine without it running - pressure will be negligible - did you get it running yet?

Running

No, Not running yet just got the carb and dizzy back from Jim C and installed em

I have a distrib cap on order that should be in tomorrow at the local auto parts

sending unit is the one from my 79 2f but I am not using it at all at the moment cause the wire doesn't reach --I installed a gauge in the place of the sending unit
I thought the 79 sender vs the 71 gage might be a prob but will look at that later if I don't just go with a gauge

I am not worried about the instruments working just wanted to be sure the dizzy is fully seated and engaging the oil pump before I start it

You should be able to test pressure using a drill - that will at least tell you the pump and your gauge is working prior to startup. Take a flathead screwdriver - hack of the handle - insert into drill and then use it to drive the pump.

test

Thanks

I thought of that before I pulled the filter but I am pretty sure the pump is okay since I saw oil coming up thru the filter housing with the filter removed

I am looking at if the distrib is actually seated all the way and the tab fully engaged in the slot

Ok you are running a aftermarket gage at the oil cooler then, my 2f oil sender/gage did not work untill I installed the old 1f gage, maybe just a fluke :meh:

your distribitor looks ok, I had the valve cover off at fire up to make sure oil is geting to the head

Distrib

Yeah aftermarket leftover from my Harley--never installed it! Had that feeling of very slightly different threads but it fit okay and the sender screwed back in like it always did

I think you are right on the sender prolly has to be a 71 but the gauge works for now

I may eventually run it into the cab it is actually a nice liquid filled gauge shame to go to waste

Thanks for taking the time to look at the distrib, I couldnt remember if it was okay like that I lost the pics I took when my computer died and I had to wipe it

with a distrib cap it just might be firing up today! I started it briefly before the carb and dizzy went off but I could barely keep it running so I am hoping for better today!

cut off wire

"Did you hook up the fuel cut off Wire?"

No not yet, I have a hot wire from the coil that is switched ignition because mine is a 71 and my old 1F did not have the cut of solenoid

so I had to run one but I was just verifying oil press first

got no distrib cap --auto parts store said they ordered it but didnt so trying to get one tomorrow:mad:
