Hi Everyone,

I have a 1999 100 and it has about 163k miles on it. Had 90k done on time, and I have owned since 130k miles. I recently started having a problem with oil pressure dropping and temp skyrocketing when I am idle for a few minutes. I noticed I am having a hard time keeping coolent in, but NO leaks that I can see. This has been going on for several weeks, but car was dirivng normal outside of that.

Today, the check engine light came on and there is what feels like a terrible engine shake when stepping on the gas.

Any suggestions of what might be going on would be greatly appreciated!

Read code of CEL, O'Reilly will do free. Low oil pressure probable just from low idle. High temp could be anything from lean fuel mixture to bad thermostat.

CEL (check engine light)

Auto parts store have a device that plugs into your 100's electronics, up under dash near gas peddle. They'll read CEL for free. They will then give you a printout of what the code of the CEL means. If it's a "probable" coil they'll let you know that, and which one(s) of the eight COP's (coil on plugs) it is. Or take to mechanic and they will charge $125 for to read CEL.

Thanks everyone. I went to O'Reilly and it is showing Coil 8 misfire...you all were right. Any feel on how badly I will get ripped off at a dealer for this? Or can any mechanic handle this?

High temp will lower oil viscosity and lower pressure.
If your still getting high temps at idle after coil pack replacement consider replacing the fan clutch.

Just got to dealer...they tried to force me to replace the entire pack, then told me labor was the same for 8 vs 1. 2 hours for labor on 1 coil replacement.

Thats no surprise whatsoever, of course he is going to try to sell you all 8! And labor for all 8 would only be a little more for 1, most the time consumption is from removing the engine cover/intake, after that each coil pack is held on by one bolt and can be swapped out in literally a minute. I would honestly just buy the coil pack yourself and as long as you have basic tools (10mm socket, screwdriver, etc), you can change it yourself. Its VERY easy.

I jinxed myself responding to this thread. P0308 . . .

$74.97 at parts deal.com and maybe less elsewhere- or through a more competitive local dealer to you.

Nearest dealer to me will match online dealer prices if I take the shopping cart print out from another Toyota dealership. Usually receive next day availability for pick up (if it's in the local warehouse) when I place the order before 5pm.

I can get parts at a great discount through one specific dealer near me. I was in a lurch with this one, 530p when wife called with code, parts closed at 6, needed the truck back on the road that evening, so had to go with closest available. Oh well.

Sorry TM, I didn't really intend to direct that towards you (I figured with your connections you'd have a hook up) I meant that for the OP.

No worries. That said, a coil pack is a great beginner thing for wrenching. For what you'd spend at the dealership you could buy a coil pack as well as a nice complete socket set that you'd have after. Unless you're just not careful (breaking clips forcing them off the coil) there's really nothing difficult.
