I am having some trouble getting the timing cover and oil pan off of my '84 FJ 60. I have tried loosening it with a rubber mallet, but I can't get it to budge. Any suggestions? Thanks so much!

Took my pan off a week ago. Mallet proved to be worthless. Ended up putting the factory jack on the passenger side of the frame and a block of wood on the side of the pan (long enough to spread out the pressure) and turned the jack until it popped off. Some of the folks here even say to put a good amount of pressure on it and in the morning it will be off. I really had to get after it and was afraid I would bend the pan. Had a slight deflection in it but it bolted back up.

i beat the crud out of mine with a 3 pound mallet the pans are much thicker and tronger than you would think.

also like stated above you can stick a jack under the pan and put a good amount (tons of it nearly lifting up truck) of pressure on it and let it sit over night it will cause the gasket to give some and when the pressure is released a couple "love taps" and it should drop right off.

Use a chisel to get started.....
