I used to be able to get Baldwin and Wix filters locally from Lordco or Napa. They always had one in stock. Not the best quality, but not bad either. Definitely too expensive for what they were, but I never seemed to get organized to pre-order better ones online.

Somehow COVID has impacted oil filter production, and I can no longer get these filters locally. So I turned to Partsouq. Initially was going to go OEM Toyota which they have for $22CAD ea before shipping. But I saw a couple Japanese aftermarket brands that sparked my interest. My experience with other Japanese made aftermarket parts has always been positive; as the quality is pretty decent.

So I took the plunge and ordered ten Union Japan C151 filters at $8.16CAD each before shipping. They showed up a week or so ago. A precursory inspection left me feeling quite satisfied with the quality. Better feeling/looking than Wix/Baldwin, and more weight to them too. I'll cut one open next oil change to see what they're all about. They're definitely a dual element design.

Just cuz I'm bored...I think I have the right Wix number, but union japan didn't make the list.

Good there's another decent brand out there.

Awesome; been a while since I'd seen that list. Thanks for that. You definitely have the right part number as I recognize the Baldwin and Wix numbers.

Good to see the other Japanese options. I'll start picking some up for my 3B. I wouldn't be that quick to discount the Baldwin filter though. Theres a reason Baldwin, Donaldson and Fleetguard are used on fleet/industrial applications and engines much more expensive than the ones in our little Toyotas.

I did cut apart a Baldwin and Wix (napa), and was not terribly impressed. But appearances can be deceiving I suppose. My feeling is the price inflation between manufacturing and me is way out of hand. They cost $35-55 depending on the 'account' I used.

Here's a Napa one (manufactured by Wix I'm pretty sure). The Baldwin one I took apart looked identical. I guess the magic is in the quality of the filter media.

I just punched in the 12HT/2H part number. 15601-68010
They show $30 & $33 Canadian. But only $7 for that brand. I just got the Toyota delivered from
ToyotaPartsOnline for $28 delivered. But I’d be willing to see what your impression is of this one.

From what I could find the Japan Union ones have a decent reputation. Probably not as good as Toyota OEM, but I am willing to bet they're at least as good as a Baldwin. My motor is just a lowly 2LTE anyhow; so doesn't deserve the best of the best!

I think minimizing engine wear is mostly about changing oil regularly, and no so much the exact brand oil/filter used each time

Here's an authentic 'toilet paper roll' Toyota filter from Japan for comparison:

They stopped making those filters unfortunately, the napa gold cost me 44.00 plus tax. I use to buy the toyota from Washington toyota for about 12 dollars each for the toilet paper type, wished I purchased a few boxes back in the day.

I'd be curious what that yanmar filter looked like.

Maybe it's rare and expensive too, but there's a lot of yanmar diesels around in all sorts of equipment.

I actually have a honda oil filter on my kubota. Was cheaper and easier to get.

Yanmar is probably not going to be cheaper than the union japan ones you have tho.

Just spent a few minutes trying to find the 3b one on toyotapartsdirect. They make that about as hard to find as they can.

It's either 6 bucks or 19 bucks, and Alice the chick in the chat window that pops up every 8 seconds can **** right off....

The 3b is the most common filter on earth tho, so it's not like that one will be hard to find locally in any brand you want.

Cut apart my Japan union filter, and it looks at least as good as the Baldwin/Wix. In fact, I'd say there is even more filter material there with a larger looking element and definitely more pleats. I'm really happy with this brand, and am going to keep using them going forward. Good thing, because I bought 10 of 'em!

That looks terrible, my Wix filters are now in the 60 dollar range. Might look into the Yanmar filters

What looks terrible about it? I could cut apart a new one if you want.... Just buy me a few beer next time I see you.:beer:

The cheap JDM one is better than wix/baldwin IMHO. I bet Yanmar will be the same inside with the dual element pleated design.

My only concerns is the size of the filter stubby at 3.5 inches tall??? Wix is 4.75 inches tall? Might try it and see how it looks after 5000km

What is all the debris on your filter element? Having never cut one of my own filters apart to see what it looks like inside. I have to ask, because it looks you were driving threw a hay field with the valve cover off.

How many km on that filter?

Hey Rob, this one is the full size 4.75" or whatever.

I cut it open with a zip disk and cut into the filter material which went everywhere. Along with metal from the housing. That's why it looks so bad.

How many km on that filter?

Only 3500km or so. My daily city commute consists of idling for 40min, and driving 10min at 30-50km/hr. Makes dirty idi diesel even more dirty. So at least I give it clean oil at short change intervals. I drive less than 10,000km a year, so works out to three changes a year or so...not too bad. Doesn't cost much now with these cheap filters lol!

Looks like a bunch of filter media from a zip cut. A proper filter cutter would be the best bet.

Didn't even know there was such a thing! Ah well, POS motor doesn't deserve full forensics.. Will leave that to those with the almighty TDI Toyota 6's.

I can't believe your engine had all that zip disc dust inside it!!!!

Jeeezus guys. Your detective skills are spectacular. :flipoff2:

With the Wix filters, last time I bought one locally for my 12ht it was 45 bucks.

From rockauto it was about half that, even with shipping. Had to search the part number because the vehicle isn't there, so not super easy to find.

I went genuine Toyota from the online place in Ontario this time around. Somewhere in the $20-25 range, so kindof a no brainer.
