What is the cause of the noise?
The source of the noise is lack of oil pressure to the timing chain tensioner, without proper tension the chain slaps around, the higher the startup RPM and the longer it takes to get oil pressure the more likely you are to get start up rattle,
The oil filter drains overnight and is partially empty in the morning (this is also, per the owner manual, why you check the oil right after shutdown) until the pump purges the filter and all of the oil holes of air there is no oil pressure, the larger the filter the longer it takes to fill and the longer the lack of oil pressure and the longer/more severe the start up rattle.
Many including my self have reduced start up RPM therefore getting rid of the start up rattle by removing the TB and cleaning it, the idle air control valve & pocket, and adjusting the TPS, you can also do the IAC o-ring trick wile you are in there to garontee a start up RPM reduction, I did not do the O-ring trick and still came out OK.
Robbie has documented drilling an oil passage in the tensioner to help it get pressure sooner.
One member has tried a 90 degree oil filter adapter, this should help with the rattle also but I have not heard weather it actually does or not. Were it not for the sideways mounting of the oil filter a larger filter would be desirable.
So far there have not been any engine damaged directly tied to the start up rattle, trucks have been known to do it for many years to no ill effect, but somewhere in the middle of 1FZ production the chain slipper was beefed up because the earlier ones were occasionally breaking, I do not know if the original slipper was just plain to weak for the task Or were the slipper not being beaten by the chain on start if this breakage would still occur? I do not have any solid info either way just a hunch that start up rattle and broken chain slippers are related.
so if you want to get rid of your start up rattle go to the smaller filters and clean your TB and possibly try heavier oil if your climate allows, if that does not eleminate the rattle and your start up RPM is still high then try the o-ring trick, if still present look into more invasive procedures like drilling your tensioner.
