landtoy, thats the feeling i get, but i'm sure its a little more complicated though. i feel secure in this method, i guess thats all that counts.

Just my two cents:

I agree with landtoy and am still not sold on the bypass filter. I wish someone would do a good test on them, i.e. run an engine without the filter, drain a quart and add a new one every 3000-5000 along with a filter change and then run the bypass with the same change routine (the bypass filter is supposed to be changed every 5000 or so and it needs about a quart of makeup oil.

Skip fram filters they are garbage.

Cary

well cary we do agree on 1 thing, fram sucks.

as far as the testing you want, it may have already been done like that somewhere.

When I was young and stupider and getting my oil changed, I used to actually go into the store and buy a Fram filter, to make sure they weren't putting some generic piece of junk on.

..that's right boys..., no junk goes on this right here car.

:slap:.

Hi Dan,

Which filter is being discontinued? I have the following oil filter part listings:
15600-41010 = original big filter. Suitable for all applications, including diesel. Is this still available?
90915-20004 = smaller replacement for 15600-41010. IS this the one that is discontinued?
90915-YZZB5 and B6 = junk?

I need to order a couple dozen oil filters and stock up on some maintainance parts.

15600-41010 is still available. The 90915-20004 and the 90915-YZZB have been supreceeded to 90915-YZZD3. I have a few 90915-20004's left.

TRD makes filters now. They claim better filtration than OEM. Available online.

Now that they are not available, how many of the 90915-20004 filters does a guy need to have stashed in order to sleep at night?

I've got 12 and another 10 coming from Dan for a total of 22. That's like 4 or 5 years worth.

With my luck my truck will die and I'll end up having to sell them on E-Bay.

I used to do the Fram thing as well when I was a young man. :whoops:

My stash of 20004 filters are running low. Should I order another batch 20004s or the 15600-41010 from Dan? I thought the 15600-41010 was a better filter?

John (confused about filters)

:slap:
Well thanks for the repeated slaps!
I have RUN to the napa store and replaced my purposefully (and obviously stupidly) purchsed FRAM . :o

thanks again

DrJ don't feel bad until a few years ago when I found out how cheaply they were built I thought Fram was the filter to have, I do not know why but they are the name in filters, unfortunately these days marketing departments do not sell products on their merits but more by image and who can get their name in your face the most, especially a product like an oil filter you are buying an mysterious orange painted tin can and you cannot see the “working” parts or have any indication of how well it is doing its job unless you go the extra steps and cut some open and do oil analysis, Fram knows the vast majority of its customers will never do either

generally a larger filter is usually considered better because it will have more surface area of media, this reduces the resistance to the flow of oil through the filter allowing the filter bypass valve to stay closed more often, also lowers the velocity of oil passing through the media for more efficient filtering and more area to hold more contaminants. A larger filter will also increase the total oil capacity allowing for slightly better oil file between changes

but we have a horizontally mounted filter making it possible for the oil to drain out of the filter wile the engine is off and contain no oil on the next start. the smaller filter will fill faster and get oil to the moving parts faster on start, some have noted a much shorted startup rattle with the smaller filter,

also the smaller discontinued 2004 has a very unusual media and very high quality construction, I have no info on what are the benefits or drawbacks of the oddball media but it looks interesting

RavenTai,
That's a very interesting web site and it gives a great image of the elusive why that we're frequently asked when questioned about the -04 filter as compared to the -b5 and other Toyota filters. Too bad they've been discontinued.

I was at father-inlaws house and he is a Amsoil man.
He had me look at a pile of amsoil stuff and noticed the filter info.

They didn't test the Toyota filter.

probably because it's better than theirs -- :whoops:

How does the 20002 filter compare to the 20004 filter? There are some 20002's available on eBay.

The 90915-20002 and 90915-20004 are interchangeable The 20002 is as good as the 20004, it is the old number.
