Oil change - Deisel or regular

As someone over the hills and far away once said: "some oil is better the no oil".

That aside, I think this debate is much like financial planning: No one cookie cutter application suits every application, no matter how much the coffee table pundits would like to declare.

Are you dirty diesel, or clean diesel. Are you IDI or DI. Are you computer controlled or mechanical controlled. Are you in a temperate climate, a climate with wild swings, or always 30C. Are your highway or city. Are you fresh new tight engine, or old tired loose engine. Are you taking samples and sending for analysis, or just winging it.

Answers to the above will perhaps lead you too the weight and service intervals you need for your application.

For me, with a 12HT and 13BT I have found that 0/40 Esso XD returned good test results which resulted in me being able to run 10,000kms oil changes, with a filter change at 5000kms. The oil not only looks cleanish, the test results say continue to use...at the 10,000kms mark. I dont. I've recently changed to Rotella T6 (05/40) due to price points, and have not run samples. I do know in either of these oil uses...startup clatter at all temps in reduced when compared to conventional 15/40...specially when coldish.

With my idi 3B (dirty engine) I typically run delo400 15/40 and was changing at 5000kms when a daily driver. For all the reasons given. Now, its under 1000 kms or so for the 3 months its insured, and it gets an oil change once a year. If I ran this in the winter (our moderate winter) I would be tempted to run slightly lighter weight for startup clatter. But something that would not hurt too much at a change of every 5000kms.

There has been some good advice on this thread, and some standard cookie cutter responses. You decide what suits your use and your climate, based on your test results.

Oh, ya...and to the OP: use a diesel rated oil. Otherwise you might be suspended by the banker, instead of the soot.

Depending on your expected winter lows, I bet Wally Worlds 5 gallon conventional diesel oil would be just fine for that change interval. Or Canadian Tires...

I'm with Greg, I don't like the clatter in -30 starts. The recommended oil used by toyota is for the anticipated temps between oil changes, here is the 1HZ chart thanks to Simon, I expect the 2LT is similar but someone should probably just post it up.

I've used 0/30, 0/40, 15/40, 20/50 (when it was free from my aviation days), used motor oil (when I had a real oil burner), 10/30 all with no problems. From my days in the arctic I tend to be nice to my truck for cold starts especially with the turbo, if really cold I don't mind leaving run over night. I ran 10/30 mobil 1 synthetic in my 3b for 3 years, not diesel rated with no issues (moosecruiser owns it now). Like everyone has said change often and change filters often, if I had to change it every 3 weeks I'd be running a cdn tire special or whatever wallmart has on sale at the time as well.

My chart is similar. However, its from a 91-96 FSM. Engine oil technology - including dino oil - has changed quite a bit since then. I do know that when I did try the synth 0W30 I started losing oil until I went back to 15W40.

I only get a bit of clatter when it is very cold. However, that doesn't happen here in the Lower Mainland or even in the interior of BC now, unless you are north of PG.
 
Shell Rotella 15w40 at Wallyworld is CHEAp and GOOD. I run it in everything, including my sport bikes.
 
On my 1Hz Toyota says 10w30 summer 5w30 winter 5000km 1Hd 10000 says it right on the air breather factory sticker. In my opinion why run 15w40 if they say 10w30. They built it do what they say and it will run along time.
