Man i wish it would be possible to paint it new with a patina :)
I love the faded look of my fj's paint, but i need to protect it from the rust...

Thanks for the info!

Spray with acrylic enamel, then wet sand, but don't polish, or polish very lightly by hand until it's just as old lookin' as you want

Yes, just saying prep and paint as normal, but use a single stage acrylic enamel like the factory did.

Then you can wet sand, stopping short of the superfine steps, and get a less-shiny, but still not dull finish.

I'm very happy with DuPont Nason Ful-Cryl II. In my experience, if you use their recommended hardener, even freshly sprayed, it doesn't have the ultra-mega-superwet-exotic-turbodeep-nitrogloss look... It kind of looks like fresh old-school Toyota truck paint.

I planned on doing the wet sand routine I just recommended to you on the 40 I'm painting now, but I'm really happy with the way its turning out using the Nason as recommended... not trying to slam them... I like the "new" old-school truck look.

Just be careful, because it is an economy line, and the Nason hardener (483-11 Cat II Catalyst) is more expensive than the el-cheapo "wet look" hardener. Don't let the paint supply store do you the favor of saving you money by steering you into the cheaper bling-bling hardener. Buy the 483-11 if you go with Ful-Cryl.

Thanks man

I am bookmarking this thread entry for later reference.

I really appreciate it :)

Oh!

and post some photos of the paint job so far !!!!

Here you go, the tire carrier shows the original paint, and it is a bit dusty. The fender shows the new paint.

nice ;)
Looks great.

How much did you polish your fender?

One could in theory polish less and get a more dull/less wet look if one was inclined?

Very cool

Now if i could only find the color code for t-333 tropical coral :(

There are chemicals now that you can add to the paint to create a flat look vs. a polished look. You still get the protection of the clear coat, just not the shine.

No polish or sanding. I think the fleet grade looks like new "old" truck paint straight out of the gun.

What brand of fleet grade paint do you use? How does it hold up long term?

----->DuPont Nason FulCryl II with their hardener

I've only used it once before, and I only kept the truck a couple of years, so can't comment on the long-term, but it was durable. The factory used acrylic enamel, and if this fades, it will just look more natural.

Acrylic urethane would probably be even more durable, but I don't have any experience with it.

Knock on wood, in my limited experience with it, I'm very happy with the FulCryl II. It's easy to spray, and looks just like I want it to.

I do not like the look of 2 stage (clear coat) on an FJ40.

The problem is, no one can tell you how much flattener to ad to achieve a certain result. Or, at least no one in this area. Hell, just buy the cheapest paint you can find and park it outside here in the desert for a couple of years. You'll get there.
