Hello. I’m looking on advice to find an OEM or as close as I can. I have a 77 that has an aftermarket muffler that doesn’t allow me to put on the skid plate. What I’ve seen they are hard to get. Pictures of what I’m dealing with...

I saw parts on specter but the actual muffler I couldn’t find. I assumed it was discontinued.

Yes u can still get oem. As well, the down pipe and tail pipe. The heat shield maybe hard to come by. If ur not doing a period correct restoration it’s probably not too hard to make your own. I’ve read that some r wrapping the pipe to help reduce the heat. Anyway, good luck!

77 muffler is NLA as far as I know. The 1/79+ is. But the muffler from 1/75 on is located in the back behind the rear axle. The 1/79 is close to the earlier ones. On the header pipe not sure what is available. My 10/75 (76 model) it hangs below the skid plate. I show a change 12/75 and not sure how that was route. If you have a California model with the original exhaust manifold it different than the Federal models.

It’s a Phoenix cruiser it’s whole life. Apr 1977. It’s all welded together atm. I believe mine should route covered by the skid plate, and the main muffler should be under the back.

I got AZ april 77 cruiser too...I do not know if mine is original, most likely not..Mine is routed from the headers inside of driver side frame rail( few inch away from the rail) going back straight to the flat oval muffler about where fender well is and then go back and turns at the driver side corner out....original was routed to the pass side what I know...I never had a problems smelling the exhaust fumes ....There is a thread here few threads down 1977 US spec restoration father and son project and 8th picture is showing exactly how my exhaust is routed...

I decided on the early 1970s route on my '75. I ordered an earlier OEM muffler, muffler clamps, muffler ring with rubber spacer, and reproduction tailpipe. I'm working on getting that bolted up. The SOR clamps I received were way too big, but one will work on my new Aussie headers if I can find a pipe to clamp over them. The rubber muffler ring spacer suggests that it might have longevity issues, and might need re-thinking. I want to go with a Land Cruiser muffler for aesthetic reasons, but I don't care that it isn't period correct. The OEM exhaust from the early 1970s 40s sounds awesome, and the configuration makes more sense to me than running it under the tub to the passenger side.

I still have all my stock exhaust intact. Exhaust pipe is not covered by skid plate. Stock routing takes pipe along side of frame but not protected by skid plate. Lots of folks re-routed exhaust inside frame rail and protected by skid plate. Downside was heat build-up inside cab.

What do you mean alongside the frame? The exhaust ran along the frame starting 1/79 when the CAT was added. Prior to that it was inside the frame rail. If it was run stock above the skid plate in 77 there would be a heat shield below the driver's floor/seat.
