My first experience with winches ....

Noticed oil was leaking from my winch the other day when I was parked nose up on an incline. I thought it was likely from the gear case but when I took the winch off today and put it on the bench, I noticed the oil was leaking from a small drain pipe at the bottom of the motor.

Removed the motor and there was some corrosion around the o ring between the motor and the brake case I didn't think that would be the problem. The oil seal was intact and didn't seem to be leaking but I am not sure what I should be looking for.

Do I need to dismantle further?

Should I expect oil to be coming from the motor?

Perhaps newb stuff but I just don't know what I need to do here ....

Thanks

Shouldn't get oil from the motor, unless a sealed bearing has lost its grease and turned to oil.
Otherwise it could be said grease/ oil but coming from the gear box end thru the brake drum and into the motor.

i wouldn't worry about it but keep an eye on it over the next few pulls.
that is my old winch and i used it 3 times in total. it was like new when i recieved the truck from Japan. i highly doubt it was ever even unspooled in Japan.

relax and reassemble and get your butt up here for the weekend.

Maybe some oil going into the engine compartment got spilled on the winch and it eventually made it's way to that point just to confound you?!

Nah, when I first noticed I thought it was a leak or spill from somewhere else but it wasn't. It's clearly transmission fluid, plus it was coming out of the little rubber spout at the bottom of the motor on the left side of the second picture.

Greased the o rings, cleaned the seals and put her back together today with the aim of getting back on the truck tomorrow. Going wheeling with Crushers this weekend and since this was his winch 2 owners ago, I'll let him have a go at it and tell me if it doesn't seem right.

Come to think of it, when I removed the motor, which was very easy b/c the bolts where a little loose, the oil seal wasn't fully seated as you can see in the first picture. Now that I have reassembled the oil seal is fully seated ... perhaps that was the problem??

Time will tell the tale ...
