I hit the trip re-set button one day and the odometer quit working. The speedometer still works fine as does everthing else. Dealer said they can order a new miles display, but will read 000000. Trying to sell and I dont want to do that, no one would trust me on how many miles are actually on it. None of my mechanics have ever fixed one before, does anybody have any clue what I should do to fix this??? Thanks,

I had this happen on my 80. This is what happened to me- your problem may or may NOT be similar in nature.

The reset arm on the trip meter resets the numbers using a small dog-leg looking piece of plastic. On my 80 this piece of plastic broke at the bend. The dog leg then rotated into the trip meter and stopped the gears (numbers) from turning. This also stopped the main odometer numbers from turning. The fix is to purchase a new speedo/odo cluster thingy. It's not cheap. I ended up calling a few junk yards and got the cluster with the milage that most closely matched my current milage ( I think I eded up about 12k miles off...). Ended up costing me about $90.

So... My bet is you broke that same dog-leg plastic part and have jammed up the works now. There is no repair for that part that I could figure out. I tried glueing mine back together and just glued all the numbers together instead....

Oh, the nice part about odering a new gauge cluster from a junk yard is that you get a whole PILE of spare gauge cluster bulbs for when yours burn out.

Thanks, I have been looking for some used parts and cant find any. Not as many Cruisers down here as other parts of the world. I will keep looking and if anyone has any ideas on the used parts let me know.

Can one say that by pushing the trip odometer button while moving causes stuff to break or strip out?

Nah, I do that all the time.

Idea: Why not just get a new miles display and set it to the current mileage? and have a few witnesses present at the time? legal witnesses?

I remember a couple years ago when my buddy got a gauge cluster for his old Geo Prizm (read: Corolla). Actual mileage was ~215k, but the new cluster was only ~190K. We just took a drill and spun it up to 215K. Legally questionable, but :meh:

It's funny to watch a Prizm speedo go 0-85 in 1/2 a second...

No formal legal training here... but.... I don't think it is illegal to reset a used odometer to reflect actual mileage.

I agree...

:hmm:

Where's Atticus when you need him?

The dealer told me just the miles display could not be changed, but I guess you could change a complete cluster, I am not sure how. In alabama any vehicle older than 10 years is "expempt" from mileage disclosure. I just figured the savvy LC buyers out there would be skeptical of my mileage discrepency explanation. Maybe I could point them to this thread in the future:meh: Anyway, I found a complete cluster but the guy was asking a little more than I wanted to pay, $200. Anyone know of another source for a cheaper cluster???

My speedo on my '93 did the same thing, but I just kept pushing the reset until it started working again and never touched it after that. Now my odometer works, but my trip doesn't.

The scrap yard.....

Nice house you got for sale, Utah is a little far out for me. How hard is it to seperate the miles display form the cluster itself??

I may be able to talk the guy into selling just the miles without the cluster.

I haven't pulled apart my cluster yet, but it's relatively simple to get out of the dash. If you can get just the miles display, that would be a bonus.

I was told the same thing. I do not think you can do the drill method like has been suggested here.

Try nix99 in Seattle, they have a website and ship. They are exclusively a toyota junk yard.

Thanks for all the info, found an odom from "lextechautomotive" great guy, has a listing on the parting out section. Great price!!!! Thanks

Seems it's a common problem, mines the same, pushed the trip button one day & it wouldn't reset properly also the main odometer stopped working, lots of button pushing & the odometer works now but not the trip.
