You should probably ask in the paint forum and not the tech forum....

that being said, it depends on what you are trying to achieve.
I was just trying to make mine all one color and change it from being such an eyesore. I sanded it down and taped things off and did the best job I could with rattlecans. I know that, one day, my truck is in good enough shape to do a restore and I am going to have to strip all this od green off and do it right. That is why I did not paint the interior od green as well because I did not want to have to strip it out of all the nooks and crannies.

Good luck

edit: I did not use primer. I washed the whole thing with dawn dishwashing liquid (grease cutter) and a scotchbrite pad to scuff the existing paint. Then taped everything that couldnt easily be removed. Then wiped it down with laquer thinner. Then paint.

Tell me about that back seat? Looks good. And I see you have the same cb radio antenna holes mine did, except I had both sides plus two more on the corners.

Cope, that looks pretty good. I will be painting my interior as well, but I think I will just leave my dash red. I will be rattle canning it with krylon camo paint. I have the stuff to wipe it down before i paint it. I'm pretty sure I will never be able to afford a proper paint job from a shop so I gotta do the best I can with the resources I have. I'll post up some pics when it's done. Should be ready by Friday. Thanks again for the tips.

Primer.....more primer......then a primer sealer.....then paint. I was impressed with DuPont's single stage Nason that we sprayed in the garage last weekend. (Color Code 637)

I am rattle can painting my cruiser, tried not using primer on a few parts I like the primer ones better. To me it just looks a little better.

I washed mine and brushed it with OD no sanding, no scuffing that was 20yrs ago still on there.

I Blew off the sanding dust with my compressor wiped it off with clean rags and painted one coat on the passenger side. It looks great. I got Krylon Camo OD. I've heard good things about it. I bought 10 cans, and it took one can to coat the pass. side so I should be able to get quite a few coats on the ol' girl. What color should I do the fiberglass top?

I would but i did it on my lunch break, plus my camera phone doesn't work and my wife and I got robbed on Kauai, HI and one of the several items they took was our digital camera. I'll have to borrow my wife's blackberry tonight and get some posted up.

mid 80's(88?) Dodge Raider. Re-covered it when I did the front seats. Search function will bring up a little more info on this mod. I am happy with it. I have the originals but they just dont seem safe to me in the US. I have ridden a lot of miles in them in Africa, but here I did not want my kids in them.

.....I will be rattle canning it with krylon camo paint....

That is exactly what I used.

I will be rattle canning it so I dont think I'll need to primer it. Cope how many cans did you use?

Hardtop and all seems like 15. I bought it on clearance at a Walmart for $3 can

I did mine with the same paint but the tan color. I painted the bezel and the top. It is one of my only regrets. I should have painted the top and bezel closer to original white.

if you use genuine military paint sand and paint it .i use surplus paint and sometimes primar for 26.00 bucks a gallon.the stuff lasts foraver.

Cope, the OD green rocks. The '81 I'm rebuilding was originally Freeborn Red which I'd redo but funds are an issue. Thanks for posting up the details, just might follow in your tracks.

So all you guys used to paint your 40s was spray paint?
I've got a 79 that the PO painted. It started out with a tan front end and a new 3/4 rear tub replacement that is aluminium diamond plate. The PO only painted the front end and windshield frame. I'm not sure how he painted it but now the paint is flaking off and you can see the original paint coming through.
I have been wanting to paint the 79 but I didn't know what it would look like with a "rattle can" paint job. But if all you guys did was sand and spray paint I will be following in your foot steps soon.

The PO more than likely didn't prep (aka sand and primer) it correctly which is why it's starting to peel.

As for rattle casn jobs, I've seen decent ones, but for the most part decent paint jobs which will last longer than a year or two require quality products such as epoxy primers, 2k primers, high build primers, sealers etc. etc. Once all that is done you would need to at least get a qualilty single stage paint or go two stage (aka base and clear coat system) to get a quality end result. With painting the more meticulous you are the better. You can buy the BEST products available, but poorly prepped work will always look like S#$T in the end.
