Off-road vehicle routes open on Hatteras, Ocracoke
The Associated Press
Posted: Monday, Nov. 03, 2014

BUXTON, N.C. Seasonal routes on Cape Hatteras National Seashore have reopened to off-road vehicles.

Acting Superintendent Kym Hall says the routes reopened over the weekend, although some may be closed for sea turtle nests. She says those roads will reopen as soon as the few remaining nests hatch.

ORV routes that reopened are: just south of the Rodanthe Pier to ramp 23; ramp 34 to ramp 38, which covers Avon beaches; east Frisco village beach boundary to 1.1 miles west; and east Hatteras village boundary to ramp 55, which covers Hatteras village beach.

On Ocracoke Island, ramp 68 near Ocracoke Campground beach also has reopened.

Areas that remain closed will be clearly marked in the field with "symbolic fencing" consisting of wooden or carsonite posts, closure signs, string and black filter fencing.

well Portsmouth (all of cape lookout natl seashore) is regulated seperately from Cape Hatteras Natl Seashore (hatteras and ocracoke islands)

There are no fees for beach driving permits and very few beach closures on Portsmouth and Cape Lookout, also ATVs are allowed. Hatteras and Ocracoke still suffer from large amts of beach closures, high beach driving tax, and numerous rules and regs, and no ATVs.

There is also a strong movement by NC legislators to implement a beach driving tax, limits on ATVs, and more beach closures for all of Cape Lookout. This is being done for the same reasons as the Hatteras areas.....bird and turtle habitats and dune damage due to idiots.

So enjoy it, 2014 might be the last year of the 'free' beach. Our elected officials are movng in strong to get their hands on the last bit of free space.

Seems to be a common thread for our gummint ... :rimshot:

I don't mind having to pay a (small) access fee as long as we can continue to use the land.

I do not either .... My comment was more towards the gummint wants to work hard to get their hands on < you fill in the blank >
